Federal Debt hits record $1,696,691,000,000; Up 257% Under Obama

From CNS News:

Thursday afternoon, the Federal Reserve revealed that its holdings of U.S. government debt had increased to an all-time record of $1,696,691,000,000 as of the close of business on Wednesday.

The Fed's holdings of U.S. government debt have increased by 257 percent since President Barack Obama was first inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2009, and the Fed is currently the single largest holder of U.S. government debt.

As of the end of November, according to the U.S. Treasury, entities in Mainland China owned about $1,170,100,000,000 in U.S. government debt, making China the largest foreign holder of U.S. government debt.

When Obama was inaugurated in 2009, the Fed owned $475.322 billion in U.S. government debt. As of the close of business on Wednesday, Jan. 23, the Fed owned $1.696691 trillion in U.S. government debt, up $1.221369 trillion during Obama's first term.

Since Obama has been president, the publicly held portion of the U.S. government debt (as opposed to the "intragovernmental" deb the government has borrowed from federal trust funds such as the Social Security Trust Fund) has increased by $5,264,245,866,257.40. The $1.221369 in additional U.S. government debt the Fed has purchased during Obama's presidency equals 23 percent of all the new publicly held debt the Treasury has issued during that time.

DEBT

Of course all of the credit cards were maxed out when Obama took office due to Bush running the military budget off of the charts while cutting taxes, which was an act of total irresponsibility that should have been criminal.

That is a record of total fiscal irresponsibilty unmatched in US history by ANY president, but somehow the tiny brains of the republicans want to ignore that (who...us???....did we do that???)..

Anyone with a brain larger than a pea kows that he created an unprecedented budget mess, and that Obama has the unenviable task of trying to shovel out of Bush's Debt Mountain, which is damn near impossible.

Your sophistry and partisan blindness to the SIGNIFICANT facts is quite amazing. It is easy to throw around meaningless numbers while ignoring the big picture, which really tells the story of how we got into this economic mess.

Of course, if you have been around Haight and Ashbury a long time, that could explain how a brain could have suffered some damage...lol.

Responsible?

No matter which way your political bias meter points, Obama has not, is not and will not be fiscaly responsible.  It's not in his political DNA.  Anybody remember 9/11?  Huge cost.  Obama takes over healthcare.....you have no idea how huge the bill for that blunder is going to be and it will go on and on and on and on..........till your dead and your children are dead and so on.  We will also be collectively more in debt like never before.  Obama also seems more than comfortable taking our money and playing investment banker with his political bundlers...how cozy.  Documented reversals of important policy positions and convenient 180's are the norm.    He destroys the enemy and tells the target audience exactly what they want to hear and then backpedals later.  He is an artist.  He is not genuine.  He is not truthful.  He is opportunistic and self serving.  Reality bears these truths to be self- evident.  It is extremely distressing that a large number of our electorate have decided to not deal with reality, but to enable a cookie cutter old fashioned political hack in new King's Robes!  America will fail if our course is not righted....and soon.

You just described the last four years of Obama's presidency.. Obama's Afghanistan war, Lybia involvement, NOW Egypt! of course those are 'good wars' because a Democrat is in office, right? Also 2.1 trillion dollar stimulus that went mostly to phony green jobs most of which were owned by Obama campaign bundlers and unions. so what's your point?

So...the Obama administrations very OWN treasury statistics are ran by tiny brain republicans? No..say it isn't so.. I wasn't aware of Obama filling the Treasury Department with Republicans. lmao!

So that 'debt mountain' cure was for Obama to increase deficit spending over 4 years over what it took Bush to do in 8 years?? Ooops!

Partisian blindness??  meaningless numbers?? So you ignore Obama's numbers have increased  because you're NOT partisian? lol! OH! I forgot....negative numbers only apply when a Republican is in the White House. So...you actually think Obama is a fiscal conservative.. and the debt is not actually at 16 trillion NOW.. Thanks for the comedic relief.

Great points. It's nice to see someone other than myself living in the real world and hasn't been indoctrinated by the Obama cult of personality.

It's interesting that with all the massive spending, all the new mountains of regulations issued by the EPA that we have absolutely nothing to show for it. In the aggregate, we are actually at 15% unemployment if you count the 8.5 million Americans that have dropped out altogether from the workforce.

What the obamazombies fail to realize is that at this point, we were supposed to be at 5% unemployment and the deficit was suppose to be cut in half as Obama promised IF we passed the stimulus and the rest of his progressive socialist experiments.

Obama promised 'fundamental transformation' of America and he is delivering in spades.

A couple of questions: If you love America, why would you want to fundamentally transform it? If you fundamentally transform something, don't you have to destroy the prior?

Obama never speaks of advancing liberty, freedom, or individual sovereignty. He only speaks in terms of class division and the low-information voter salivates over it like they did during Mao's 'Great leap forward' and Lenin's 1917 workers revolution.

Ask ANY Obama supporter about Obama's policies and they haven't a clue. sick!

Decline by design

Eventually all civilizations decline or are overthrown from within or without!  It is predictable and I would venture to say, required by natural design.  On any scale of reference, there is birth, growth and then death.  A recycling of material and energy and in addition, perhaps even our souls, adds potential meaning to the inevitable cycle of Thanatos and Genesis.  It's a shame however, that the great experiment of America seems to have been severely short lived.  We are, afterall, animals recently removed from our indigenous habitat...technology has advanced but Man has not.  Most of human existence has suffered the burden of self inflicted submission and oppression by the dominant few.  For a few brief years we enjoyed the closest thing to freedom man has ever known.  Good times indeed!

Back to blaming Bush???

We are blessed to have such a supreme political party in power. Just think how bad we would have it if they wouldn't tell us how live our lives... You know that big govenment knows all, we are all so lucky... Modern man's mind is so progressive, more advanced then our country's founders' where...

Oh one more thing, freedom doesn't run cheap... And trees don't hug you back...

A melting pot of creativity and freedom lost to dependancy!

When those who want to take more than they are willing to earn, and when they decide to elect rulers who are eager to deliver in exchange for their complete dependancy on the state....then we are America no more:(  Ignorance and a denial of reality combined with a culture that promotes immediate gratification can not thrive.  We the people, must hold our leaders accountable to the ideals and beliefs upon which our great country was founded....no exceptions!  Obama is FDR Redux....it didn't work for FDR and it will not work for Obama.  It took WWII for our economy to climb it's way out of the recession.  The way our foreign policy is being handled these days, maybe this president will repeat FDR's policies in total.  Quite amazing how much damage an electorate will absorb on behalf of a failed ideology.

lol!

I like your cynicism..and considering the current occupant of the White House, its very appropriate at this juncture.

This guy Obama is so in_your_face with his egalitarian attitude. He snubs his nose at the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

ANY politician that gets on National television and declares "If Congress doesn't act I will" is openly telling the population that he doesn't give a crap about the Separation of Powers, and will ignore the Constitution and violate it if he feels the need. And he has several times. ie; declaring that Congress and the Senate was in recess when the were not, and appointed his new Secretary for the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board). Even a Federal court ruled that was unconstitutional and he still presses 'forward'.. pun intended..

Problem is, the current crop of Republicans do not know how to handle this individual that is openly promoting a political philosophy that for the most part, is foreign to this Country.

Fact of the matter, Obama really doesn't have much of a connection with America. He spend alot of his time in Indonesia and Hawaii in the mid 70's when Communism was running rampant there. Communist Frank M. Marshall (Uncle Frank) in Hawaii was a mentor to him as he openly said in his book  "the Audacity of Hope" Obama even said in his other book "Dreams of My Father" that while he was in college he felt more comfortable aroung the marxist professors. Neverming his communist mother Ann Dunham and his communist Father.

But we are suppose to believe that his upbringing has nothing to do with his politics. Give me a freakin break!

Thank you

I appreciate it Allen. There was once a time when I could care less about politics, but after the birth of my daughter things changed when I found out the debt that has been incurred on her initially by George Bush, now that debt on her has exploded 100 fold under this hack politician Obama.

Gotta keep fighting the good fight I guess.

The Point

If you own a business, and want to ensure growth, you must ensure cash flow (business 101). This means, as you get deeper in debt, you must continue to market and increase your sales in widgets/services. If you stop spending, your fate is sealed. Even companies in bankruptcy do not stop spending.

I've been doing this for years and have seen many peaks and valleys. The change in past 10 years or so, is that trending data correlates with the world economy, not just U.S. sales figures. We are bigger, all numbers are fatter. Does not mean more successful, as revenue is still flat, but my, how the times have changed. We have to spend more.

The United States is the most powerful country in the world, in both monetary figures and military figures. The world depends on our strong economy and our help in humanitarian efforts and unfortunatley, to act as a world police force. Advances in chemical and nuclear warfare warrants such action.

Clinton got us out of debt by invigorating the GDP. Growth is paramount, and spending is the only way to grow. If you want to sit out a period of downtime, create a 10-year budget where you cut spending and thus cross your fingers and hope your still in business in 2022.

What China loaned us to get out of the hole we were in (that both parties put us in), we will be loaning back to them when they sink into the abyss (and if you know anything about China that will be soon!). All of us humans are stuck on earth with one another, good or bad, republican or democrat.

Fear is the factor that both political party's use to invoke votes. Fear is what companies use to sell product (especially pharmacuetical). We are trillions in debt. To what? To whom? When will God come down and demand payment? At what point or number does that debt invoke fear to you? in relative terms, the world is much bigger in size than when you were a kid. So is the debt. It's likely your waste size is as well. Our company's debt is bigger, but we are bigger by virtue of having grown up.

An economy is a business- components of a government running a country are really no different than John Atkinson tasked with growing this magazine. Much of our economy is improving, our business is improving, and you are buying magazines and probably purchasing hi-end audio equipment so perhaps your rants/fears are able to be quelled by pulling out your wallet and soothing your soul with the sounds of musical nirvana??? Does not sound so bad after all then right???
