A lot of speakers have rear ports, so that makes the kind of placement you are talking about a bad idea.

You need speakers that are either front-ported or of the sealed acoustic suspension type to work well in that situation.

I can tell you of several speakers, but your budget of $200 is a bit of a problem. NHT makes sealed acoustic suspension speakers, but the speakers that would be big enough for your room are a LOT more expensive than that ($800 per pair).

Monitor Audio makes front-ported speakers, and KEF also does. Again, however, the price for a speaker large enough for that room is going to be well over $200.

The KEF C3 speakers are $329 per pair, and the Monitor Audio BX-2 are $489 per pair. Thiose would work. They both make cheaper speakers, but they are too small for your situation.

So I have another post a few lines down that outlines my (almost) setup. Its a basic turntable setup with a receiver and what will be 2 bookshelf speakers.

My conecern is that speaker space is limited (my intended room is an aprx 14'x20' dining room) as I was planning on putting the record player on a side table, and then the speakers either on the table as well, or on a bookshelf nearby. What are some good speakers that do not require lots of space behind them?

budget ~$200

thanks
