The two respective speakers are so different there really can't be any comparison other than price. The ML's with the exception of the pleated tweeter are cone based front firing box based speakers. The MMG's are dipolar planar magnetics with no cones at all. I suggest you audition them and decide for yourself.
I believe the Motion 12's can be auditioned at a Best Buy that has a Magnolia sub store. You can audition the MMG's by getting them direct from Magnepan with a 30 day full refund return policy.
Personally the MG-12's are my choice for speakers that cost around $1000 a pair. Magnepan dealers stock them. The MMG's are only available direct from Magnepan. The MG-12's are larger, have better bass and will be a better fit in a larger room. The MMG's are actually an insidious and successful plot by Magnepan to get you hooked on their product line.
Only available direct from the factory, 30 day return for full refund. 100% trade in value if traded in on a larger pair of Maggy's within a year.
Would you recommend MMG rather than Motion12 for music listening?
However, in fairness, I did not listen to MMGs and the Motion speakers side by side and have lived with MMGs for so long I may have a builtin bias. I'd listen to both before making a decision. They are available for audition in the manner JoeE SP9 indicated.
Thanks for your comments! I tried but seems Magnolia no longer has Motion12 -- seems discontinued.
I'll definitely give MMG a try:)
According to all the reports, Magnepan has very few returns of the trial MMG's. IMO that's quite significant
Although there is disagreement about break in of many things including speakers, there is almost universal agreement that speakers from Magnepan need a break in. At around 40 hours they start sounding good. It may take up to 100 hours before they sound their best. Of course, the exact time depends on the type of music and the volume you use for listening.
Thanks for the information, your help is very much appreciated!
