It could be the CD's. Contrary to popular thought, CD's are not indestructible. Scratches, dirt and fingerprints can all contribute to poor sound. Have you examined the playing surfaces of the CD's in question?

What program are you using to rip your CD's? I use EAC (Exact Audio Copy), it's freeware that makes bit perfect copies. Most of the ripper programs don't do bit perfect copying.

Hi JoeE,

Thank you for your reply.

I have examined the cd surface and cannot see any scratches or rogue bits of dirt/grit. The cd's are relatively new (purchased them around 3 weeks ago).

I am using Dbpoweramp with accuraterip secure settings, converting into complete lossless FLAC files. No errors returned when ripping had finished and the accuraterip number came in at 47 which added to the surprise as I thought it compares to other rips on the database to give perfect results.

What is EAC like to use? I might try that to see if it makes a difference.

KR,
Jon

It might not be static, it might be digital clipping in the recording.  This is an unfortunate side effect of the loudness wars.  If you've used dBpoweramp, and 47 other users had identical rips, I doubt it's a defective disc.  If you'd care to share the names of the discs, perhaps others here who own the same titles could give another listen.

Hi Bertdw,

Probably the most impacted track is 'give into me', on the album 'Dangerous' by Michael Jackson. There is static noise towards the end of the track when Slash is doing his solo, but the blip occurs at around 0:43 seconds, shortly into the first chorus (I will have another listen this morning to get the exact timing).

It's driving me mad and I'm now starting to think other albums are impacted! Hopefully it will be the cd and not the way I am ripping or my pc! :(

Hi Jonny,

You're in luck.  Although The King of Pop is absent from my collection, my daughter has a copy of "Dangerous."  I hear a little "chuff" of noise in "Give In To Me" at about 0:45, and again at 2:29 and 4:10.  They're in the left channel, very brief and not very loud, but they're there.

Hi Bertdw,

Thank you for your reply and help with this.

I have them in the exact timings mentioned above so the fault has derived from the master recording. My mind is now at rest! :)

Thank you to everyone who replied.
