a pair of used New Large Advents in the wood veneer cabinets. I used to own five pairs of New Large Advents (one pair I had for 32 years) until I downsized my equipment. $250 should get you a pair in good condition with replaced woofer foam surrounds. They work well close to the wall behind them and would actually need baffle step compensation if you bring them out into the room any.
For turntable advice you can't beat the Vinyl Engine forum. Is vintage a prerequisite? A Pro-Ject Debut Carbon for $300 will offer you a taste of how good vinyl can be.

Thanks for the insight. I have certainly thought about bigger Advents as a replacement, but have never been too impressed with their sound, but I do like the aesthetic. In addition, there will be plenty of room to pull the speakers out from the wall, a look I love but she'll likely hate.
The turntable doesn't have to be vintage, but she does prefer that look and the idea of bringing old electronics to life. I'll check out the vinyl engine forum, thanks!

I suggest that you consider a Music Hall MMF-2.2 turntable, which comes complete with a decent cartridge ready to go for around $450. Old turntables tend to either be junk or worn out or both.
A very good pair of speakers you might consider are the Monitor Audio Bronze BX-2 speakers; Audio Advisor sells them for $489 per pair in black oak or natural walnut finishes.
$300 does not buy you much these days; they are either too small to sound good or too cheaply made to sound good.
You could get the Boston Acoustics Classic CS26 speakers; they are not too bad, and Amazon sells them for $150 each. I guess that is the best you can do if $500 is too much to spend on this.
