In another thread himynameisjuan found the Music Hall MMF-2.2 for $360 until July 9th. http://www.insound.com/Music-Hall-MMF-22-with-Tracker-Cartridge-Gloss-Black-TURNTABLE-Music-Hall/P/INS70687/ This is a better table than the ProJect Debut III. For a phono preamp look to the Musical Fidelity V-LPS Mk II for $190 which is noticably better than the ProJect Phono Box. For more than $100 less than the V-LPS, I was impressed with the Rek-O-Kut Professional Preamp MKII for $74 which is likely the equal of the ProJect.
To just get playing records you could get the Harman Kardon HK3390 stereo receiver for around $240 which has a passable phono input and you wouldn't need a separate phono preamp.
For speakers hopefully you can go listen to as many as possible before you make a choice.
Thanks for the input. I've been thinking more and more about it and have decided to actually go with the RP1 or MMF 2.2. I think I noticed you recommended the MMF over the RP1 before, any particular reason? It seems people are pretty 50/50 on the two. I scoured the internet while researching turntables and never saw an MMF 2.2 for less than $445 (New).
I went to my local sound shop and the guy was pushing that I get the Yamaha RS300 Receiver ($280) with phono input. It seems to have good reviews online. Any thoughts on it appreciated. I asked him if a seperate phono preamp coupled with an amp/receiver creates better quality sound versus a receiver with the phono input already in it. He said no, it'll be about the same- would love to get a second opinion about that.
He was also pushing Paradigm Atom speakers ($400).

The construction of the tonearms may be similar between them but the Music Hall MMF-2.2 has adjustable vertical tracking angle. A no brainer to get the MMF-2.2 for $360 over the RP-1, let alone $450.
