My only concern is I could not find any info on the carbon tone arm, hows it sound?

Better than the aluminum tonearm on the Debut III.

You should check to see if the Acryl-It platter works on the Debut Carbon, it has a larger platter than the Debut III. I personally think the Music Hall MMF-2.2 is a better choice in the long haul, good cartridge, adjustable VTA and will accept the Acryl-It platter. If your cartridge upgrade plans include moving up in the Ortofon 2M line (or a cartridge with a similar height) then the Debut Carbon VTA should be OK.

For a preamp I was thinking of going with the Bellari VP130.

A nice sounding phono stage to be sure. You might also consider a solid state phono preamp like the Musical Fidelity V-LPS or Cambridge Audio 651P.

Another question I had was regarding cables.

The Debut Carbon comes with an adequate cable. Blue Jeans Cable should work for the rest of your needs.

I would suggest the Music Hall MMF 2.2 Turntable. I have the MMF-7 at one home and the 2.2 at the other and they are both excellent. The 2.2 is available for $450 and that is a real bargain for its quality.

I also recommend that you get the Musical Fidelity V-LPS  phono preamp, which is less than $200 and sounds absolutely great.

After doing some reading I'm leaning towards getting a Pro-ject Debut Carbon. I like that it comes with the Ortofon 2m cartrige. I also would be getting the acryl-it platter upgrade. My only concern is I could not find any info on the carbon tone arm, hows it sound? I feel like they are cutting corners somewhere inorder to offer the 2m cartridge and keep the price the same as the Debut III. For a preamp I was thinking of going with the Bellari VP130.

All together this will probably set me back close to $800. I don't want to spend much more. Another question I had was regarding cables. I was looking at some sites and the cheapest RCA cables were about $40. Since I would need to sets, turntable > preamp > reciever, is the money worth it?

Thanks for reading!!

My understanding about the ortofon 2M series is that one can upgrade the already good 2M Red with the even better Blue by a stylus swap (I did it). As I understand it, that is it. You need to buy the much more expensive Bronze to have an upgrade option to the Black, which is by far the best in the 2M series...
