Any good quality speaker wire should suffice. I really don't think $300 is necessary. But if it makes you feel better...

I just use Dayton SCP-6 six foot speaker cable with bananas.

I use bi-wire #10 Alpha Wire (6719) with 100+ strands and gold spade lugs, available online from several sources.

It's running about $150 for a 100 foot spool from electronics supply houses.

For long runs, about 22 feet, I am using some home spun cables made of 2 runs of six #18 conductor Genesis (now Honeywell) OFC communications cable.  Each #18 conductor consist of 6 strands.  The two runs are  twisted and wrapped in teflon plumbers tape to hold the turns ratio.  Each of the two runs have a grounded foil screen, which are combined and terminated at neutral only at the amplifier end.  They sound wonderful.  Only thing left to do is put a protective pex or woven nylon wrap and terminate with spade lugs.  They are a rarity in cables.  A really heavy cable made up mostly of wire.  :-)

For shorter runs I have a set of Kimber 4tc, yellow, and a set of Wasatch, don't remember model.  Both are very good but for some reason, Kimbers seem to not work well with lower impedence speakers, such as my Definitive Techs and my old Sony M's.  My guess is they rely on a tighter braid for RF rejection, and this increases cable capacitance in lower impedence speakers.  But, I'm no EE.  Conversely the Wasatch are a looser, simple twisted construction of the same total gauge and a similar teflon insulator and rely on copious amounts of good luck for noise rejection.  They seem to sound good on everything I put them to.

I guess it just is what it is.
