That's tough; not too many high-end places even have decent listening rooms anymore.
In my case, that is compounded by living a long way from those few that are available.
My solution has been to get stuff from Audio Advisor and demo it at home, which is the far superior way anyway; nothing matches your own acoustics, even in the best showroom.
They give you free shipping, no sales tax, and 30 days of free home trial; you do pay return shipping on anything you send back; that really works for me.
A current good deal you might be interested there is the Cambridge Audio 650A integrated amp, which has been marked down from $779 to $499. That is listed by Stereophile in Recommended Components, and that is a great price.
Put that together with a Pair of Monitor Audio M4 tower speakers for $498, or the Monitor Audio Bronze BX-2 monitors for $489, and you would have nice little system at a reasonable price.
P.S.- I am selling my NAD 356BEE integrated, which The Absolute Sound is currently recommending as the amp for their "$3600 recommended System". I have an ad in the AVS forums classifieds. $450; like new (used 6 months). I upgraded to the Musical Fidelity M3i, which is wonderful for $1500.

Hi All, I'm new to New York - where can I demo entry level equipment? I've found several high-end places but as a Brit who is here for a couple of years there's no point in me spending too much. I'm thinking Marantz, Cambridge Audio, NAD and the like. (Btw, I've looked on the Audiogen boards and can't see anything that takes my fancy...) Cheers, Phil P.S. Commsysman: I've done a similar thing, albeit with Best Buy (that way I can drop it off at a store rather than paying shipping costs if I don't like it). Have bought Yamaha A-S500 amp and Marantz CD5004 - already have Wharfedale Pacific Evo 10 speakers which I've brought with me from the UK. I'll see what the threesome sounds like and make a decision. However, as to home listening: personally I'd rather trial in a store so that I can listen to several components one after the other to do a direct comparison...
Anyone want to set-up an entry level hifi store in NYC?! ;o)
