new to DAC from iMac

The audible difference between USB and Toslink, if they are inputting to the same place, will range from small to nothing.
But if you mean that you will use a new DAC, via USB, and then the DAC's analog output goes to the Yamaha receiver, and assuming that DAC is better than the one built-in to the Yamaha, then it will sound better.
So the yamaha is htr 5740, and I was looking at a DAC, costing in the $200 range, Im I better just keeping with what I have, by the way the speakers are Polk audio ls50s, let me know, also most of my music is apple lossless or at the least 320
I don't know those particular products. An ugly shortcut would be to ask how much the Yamaha costs. The DAC inside there will be a small fraction of the receiver cost Maybe one-tenth at most. If your proposed DAC is $200 then I bet it's way better than the yamaha htr.

It's hard to say if you will hear an improvement by adding an external DAC. Especially without knowledge or experience with the exact components in question.
I suspect that at the level you are talking about, you may not hear much of a difference. Like BillB kind of said though, without knowing how poor the DAC in your receiver might be, or how good the DAC you would end up getting, it's really a guess as to whether it will make a noticeable difference. It's not that cut and dried unless you could have a listen.

yeah it's not a real high-end reciever and it's from 2004, but i only paid $40 for it.
the manual says "The HTR-5740 uses extremely high performance 192kHz/24-bit DAC"
so, since i'm new to this stuff what does that mean
and here are the specs for the Polks
