Instead of buying low-fi speakers and spending money to try and make them sound better why not save your money and buy better speakers. It will be cheaper in the long run to buy speakers that don't need modifications to make them acceptable to you. Of course if DIY is your thing that's something else. If DIY is your thing why not build a pair of speakers that hopefully have the sound you want.

One pair of good speakers will always sound better than multiple pairs of mediocre ones.
