As you havea  Mac, you can use a front-end "helper" program like Decibel, Pure Music, or Amarra to take care of these things automatically. See Art Dudley's write-up at www.stereophile.com/content/listening-103.

(AD's recent meanderings with computer music replay are like water in the desert, but that doesn't mean the thirst is quenched. Thank you, JA, for the important assist.)

And Jeff, keep in mind that music replay from an OS maker is nearly a complete afterthought. For years professional musicians have had to do end-runs around various limitations, so it should be no surprise that people NOT making money from music should as well.

But characterizing OS X (or Windows', for that matter) shortcomings here as "problems" is a bit of a stretch. Although the situation might change if high rez files ever "catch on" in the mainstream there will always be opportunities for 3rd party devs to make something better geared for us.

Just an FYI, you'd be able to use the Remote iOS app with Pure Music, because PM retains iTunes as the database and song selection interface.
