Does anything allow the file I'm playing to select its output sample-rate, or do I really need to select 44.1, 88.2, or 96 depending on the file.

As you havea  Mac, you can use a front-end "helper" program like Decibel, Pure Music, or Amarra to take care of these things automatically. See Art Dudley's write-up at www.stereophile.com/content/listening-103.

Thanks, it does look like those would do the trick.  I does seem odd to me, though, that a hack isn't available for Audio/Midi Setup as it seems as if this is a problem with that side of the software, not really iTunes.  But, then, I may not know nearly as much about OS programming as I should to make that statement.

in the Sptember issue, p.121 ... It's required reading if you're wanting to parse any "conclusion" from the other piece.

(AD's recent meanderings with computer music replay are like water in the desert, but that doesn't mean the thirst is quenched. Thank you, JA, for the important assist.)

And Jeff, keep in mind that music replay from an OS maker is nearly a complete afterthought. For years professional musicians have had to do end-runs around various limitations, so it should be no surprise that people NOT making money from music should as well.

But characterizing OS X (or Windows', for that matter) shortcomings here as "problems" is a bit of a stretch. Although the situation might change if high rez files ever "catch on" in the mainstream there will always be opportunities for 3rd party devs to make something better geared for us.

Update; I've ended up using decibel, and have been quite happy so far.  Not being able to use the "remote" app from my iPad to control iTunes anymore kind of sucks, but the sound quality is a significant step up.  Also, not having to shut down my music player everytime the source material's sample-rate changes has been worth the trade-off.  Thanks for the input.

"Sounds" good!

Just an FYI, you'd be able to use the Remote iOS app with Pure Music, because PM retains iTunes as the database and song selection interface.
