As a gay audiophile I do not look for or desire female companionship so please do not feel embarrassed for me. As far as audiophiles that through no fault of their own or disability have not been able to find companionship I find your embarrassment for them insensitive. Maybe it is because of youth that you are not aware of the struggles and disappointments of others. A little empathy and less embarrassment might be in order.

i love hearing about your adventures.  i believe that you have done a great service to those girls by introducing them to the hobby.  if not for you, do you think there would be a snowball's chance in a hot place that they would be involved.  also, i think perspective is added when you make a change, do not say what it is and then record the reactions from these non-audiophiles.  they are not looking for a change per se, but as in this month,s installment, only for the record to play without skipping, the fact that they picked up on an improvement was gravy.  this also helps support we that believe in improvements that cannot be backed by science such as cables.

You bring up an interesting point, but it's a point that I don't understand. So, maybe you can help me understand it. It's a point that my copy editor brought up, too, and a point that confounds me. (It's a copy editor's job to confound his writers from time to time.)  

My question(s): What does sexual orientation have to do with companionship? Why wouldn't anyone (gay, straight, or other) want female companionship?

(Women are a lot of fun to hang out with.)

Stephen, What I had to say about myself was mostly tongue in cheek. I do read your column and have no problem with you writing about the women. I also want to say that I am not overly sensitive, as another poster suggested, but not insensitive. I work in healthcare and know a few fellow audiophiles that either through disability or disfigurement are not able to find female companionship. I would not want to add embarrassment to their sadness. Since I do work in healthcare I am around women all day long. In my spare time I enjoy the company of a buddy or my dog. John

But what are you planning on listening to this weekend?

I am wanting to get out some Minutemen and Joe Pass. I have a lot of the Joe Pass solo or small combo records that I am feeling the need to get on my computer and iPod. Then there is some Fleetwood Mac as well. Lately I have been slacking off on the serious listening as I have been getting the meta data on my computer files fixed up.

Any plans you could share? I would appreciate your input.

I will be listening to a wide variety of music. A mix of vinyl and cd. I recently purchased some AntiCables speaker cables to try out. I will be listening to some classical Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", Holst "The Planets" and Carmina Burana for vocals. Female vocalists Sarah and Ella along with some Weather Report. Then throw in a little Lucinda Williams live for a rock/country sound. So far the cables are sounding great and this mix should let me know if the Anti's will be in the system long term.

I am really interested in your thoughts of the cables! Please let us know!

I will write my thoughts in the Cable section but will share what I have heard so far. I had been using Audioquest Slates between my Krell S-300i and Mobile Fidelity OML1's. The AntiCables have better midrange clarity than the AQ's. The soundstage is wider and taller with the Anti's. Another interesting aspect of the Anti's is individual performers are more focused but much more air around them. I had read about this effect from expensive electronics and top level speakers but never thought I could achieve it with reasonably priced cables.

I love Ella as well. We named one of our puppies Ella. Do you have a favorite Ella disc?

My favorite Ella LP is Ella in Berlin. I have the Anti-Cables and they sound great. Very open and easy to listen to. My pre is an Audible 3A and my amps Quickie V4's. They have a clarity that is striking. I like some warmth in the mid-bass and these cables give a my system a compensating balance. This not to say that they are bright. Also you can buy them terminated (a slight upcharge) or buy a 100 foot roll and use a dremel tool to clean off the ends and use bare wire. Highly recommended!
