Do you think Common's writing is actually bad here? While it definitely does not hold a candle to the immediacy and poignance of the Dickinson poem sampled, its also some interesting writing with a good deal of rhythm to it.
Is this poetry reading for children? If so, I can see Common being out of place - especially since kids can probably learn so much more for more classic poets. But if this is just a basic reading, why not invite Common? Keep things interesting.
Yes, local high school students were in attendance, as was their OWN children, Sasha and Malia. Bad judgement? I certainly think so.

Moreover, considering that the President of the U.S. is in fact, the chief law enforcement officer of the land, Why would a rapper that speaks in so many words, about shooting law enforcement officers be invited to a poetry reading where the chief law enforcement officer of the land lives?
Makes no logical sense in my estimation, and sends mixed messages to young people as if they weren't already being bombarded with other negative aspects of modern culture.
Peace Bro,

This could turn out to be worse than the senseless cocaine-fueled shooting spree that occurred in Reno after Johnny Cash's performance at the White House.
Leave it to John Stewart for the sound perspective (and also slamming Bill O'Reily at the same time)

It would have been nice if he read from, "Where the Wild Things Are"
Or at the very least he could have had the dignity to read from, "The Lord of the Flies".
Rude commentary.
It is much easier, true.
But, not constructive!
