if this is more anti-smoker hysteria. I quit cigarettes a long time ago, and while I smoke the occasional cigar, it is never in my house. I can see and understand how a flood could harm my equipment, as it did! I can see how smoke from a house fire could harm my equipment.
But I cannot see how smoke would be more harmful than dust and cat dander to equipment.
But I am willing to be shown otherwise.

When I used to smoke cigarettes (quit 8 years ago) I had 2 computer CPU,s, at different times, go south for no apparent reason. The 2nd time it happened I took the thing into a repair shop. The guy called later that day and asked me if I smoked ... apparently, smoking created a sticky shellac kind of surface on the circuit boards and everywhere else inside of the cabinet. There was fuzzy, gooey, grossness all over the interior.
My conclusion is that smoking does the same thing to electronics as it does to you ... kills.

it into your lungs or into the computer case via the fan for it to kill ya! Fortunatly, in my case they were able to shock me back to life. Not sure if that works on equipment. :-)

I quite about 20 years ago but it was a bear. And I smoked right next to my computer too.
But I do not smoke right next to my stereo. I doubt many of us do. Smoke can be considered a particulate and particle disperse. Smoking next to a component is not the same as smoking in the same room as a component I wager.

How many pre-amps have suffered an early death due to second hand smoke? :)
Seriously, look at the blinds, baseboards, and in some cases even the walls of the home of a smoker ... I would say that smoking in the same room as your equipment will cause damage.
