I watched the event last night...what was that mess? We had whooping, cheering, high fives, a rope line and fist bumping. They even gave away T-Shirts

I think Obama was taken aback by the party tone of the event, though he made no effort to remind folk they were at a memorial, not a basketball pep rally. While the crowd was partying the families of the victims sat on their hands and looked very uncomfortable.

Welstone II

The lesson should be to NEVER hold a memorial on a college campus.

Right! The same antics went on during Minnesota Democrat Sen. Paul Wellstone's memorial. Tasteless.

I am now reading that the campaign T-shirts distributed came from the White House! I was giving the President a pass for the tone of the event...I figured he did not expect cheering, shout-outs, clapping, fist bumping, rope lines, etc. If, however, the T-shirts DID come from the White House, then they are at least partly responsible for the festival atmosphere at the 'memorial'.

The only Man of Cloth there was a fucking Medicine Man. What the fuck?

Anyway, I almost chocked having the Bible read to me by politicians with a standing ovation. What the fuck?

I think there was some catharsis going on with the student body- most people are very uncomfortable with death and do not know how to behave in a solemn, respectful way in the midst of a huge throng. There were also war hoops and hollering during the moment of silence for these victims at the BCS championship game. People can be dumb, that's for sure.

The president's speech/sermon was a fitting tribute to the victims and their families and the community that lost them. But if you're too wrapped up in slamming the prez, you won't get that anyway. Too bad.

The President got the best he could hope for. People with any sense thinking he did, "okay". The reason for the stupid behavior is that this was not set up very well for a memorial. As usual, the fucking idiots got to set it up like a fucking ball game. T-shirts, logos, and all. Fucking idiotic morons. Did you hear the idiot stadium employee during the moment of silence yelling, "PEANUTS! ICE COLD BEER! PEANUTS! ICE COLD BEER!"

The only thing the pep rally lacked was short skirts and pom-poms

for the Obama critics was more of the same political carping that poisons our discourse. You didn't feel the emotional impact of a nation mourning these senseless deaths with the people of Arizona? You didn't see the gratitude of the victims' families? Their tears and loss is just more fodder for your implacable cynicism? Unbelievable. I think you are better people than that- I know you are.

I can't believe the people of Arizona re-elected the RINO waffler John McCain over J.D. Hayworth.
