In Leopard, on the left you see a "Properties For:" banner. Clicking on it will give the output device's properties on the bottom right of the screen.
In Snow Leopard, all the devices are listed on the left and you select which one you are interested in to see its properties.
Did you go to the System Settings button in the dock and select the default sound device in the "Sound" menu?

Thank you very much for the advice. I combined your comments with a timely E-mail from the software folk and got past my confusion...again, thanks...
Now my problem is an iMAC that is running hot. AS it is 3 years old but only has maybe 500 hours of operation on it, running ht is alarming.
Now add in that I have not the slightest idea how to open the beastie and clean it if needed and I find myself with another reason to love computers.
