What do you sit in when listening to your system?

Reader Doug Cline just bought a new La-Z-Boy and likes the way it feels, but wonders about its effect on the sound. What do you prefer for listening?

It doesn't matter where you sit as long as it is comfortable. To be completely honest, palpable presence, visceral impact, and tonal balance are all best enjoyed with an excellent bottle of wine. Doesn't sound so good? Take another drink. You'll never have the urge to swap a cable in the middle of a session again.

It needed to be a rocking recliner. One never knows what mood they will be in.

Dead-center middle of the sofa is the sweet spot of our home theater. However, an awful lot of listening is done in my office chair, a dining-room chair, and airline seats. (I frequently work at home, we always have music playing when taking meals, and I travel a lot.)

Big leather "Chair and a half" Big leather ottoman to stretch out on. Enough room for the S.O. if she's in the mood. Gives new meaning to the term "sweet spot."

A reclining wing back. Functional yet stylish.

I use an uncomfortable, thin vinyl-over-a-metal-frame chair because I've been too lazy to buy anything else. I first tried a vinyl covered normally stuffed chair, but the high-end response changed dramatically from sitting forward to resting my head against the chair - none of THAT!

The couch is best; it's big enough that I don't spill the scotch as I yell at the kids to get the heck out of the way.

I sit on my monoblock shipping crates. After I broke the bank on the system, I couldn't afford furniture.

The true test of a good system is (believe it or not) how it sounds when you are in another room. When I turn my big rig on in the main room, I never sit in front of it. Heavens no. Rather, I excuse myself to the bar in my kitchen, where I stand and enjoy the "band in the next room." Really, it sounds like I'm standing in the back room of some backwoods honky tonk. I guess the two rooms are put together in such a way so as to create a magical and unexpected interplay of sounds. Some would say I compromise imaging, etc. I don't know about that. I do know it sounds realistic, if not a bit raucous. Chairs are for wimps.

But I want a Herman Miller Aeron Side Chair!

couches are more comfortable but generally low which makes you face the woofers. chair is a better choice.

Only in a classic Eames chair with ottoman---it's just the right height.

With ottoman and glass of perfectly chilled Montrachet. Life is GOOD.

I prefer using a mobile audiophile receptacle device. My wife, Carolyn, who's somewhat less technically oriented, calls it a wheelchair.

Well, there, YOU said it---when I listen to music I will go to the fridge, grab a Molson or Moosehead, go back to the listening room, go directly to the stereo stand, grab the remote(s), and then plop my ass right down in my La-Z-Boy. Sheeeiitt, this IS the American Dream. You all better wake up and come on in?!

A recliner . . . with a footstool. When I have a guest, s/he sits in the chair and I sit on the footstool.

A two-person leather couch is all I use. And when my freinds come over, well . . . they stand. (But only for a little while.)

My couch has large, overstuffed pillows all around. Helps absorb reflections at the listening position. Also folds out to a bed for extra-long and sometimes dreamy listening marathons.

I have a wonderful Natuzzi Palomino leather chair and ottoman. I tried the same combo in a deep green, but found that the highs got a little zippy.

I have a La-Z-Boy couch. I've noticed that the high padded back absorbs a lot of sound. It took some getting used to. I do like how the music gathers around me.

i've got a brick fireplace with a raisedshelf under the hearth. it's a sort of brick bench. So, if I'm not settling in for a long listeneing session that will require moving an armchair to the sweet spot, I put a gardener's neeler pad down, and settle in for a few choice cuts

A big ol' overstuffed chair at the third point of the triangle is what I prefer. The couch is what I get. Sometimes the SO (significant other) has something to say about it. I just listen and go, "Yes, Dear."

I use one of the modern classics of contemporary design---the Charles Eames leather lounge chair---placed right in the sweet spot. Articulated design, molded plywood/veneer. A pretty comfortable chair, perfect for those with modern decor. Black leather, of course. Check it out at hermannmiller.com!
