Celestion SL-700 A great bargain since they have been discontinued (so you will have to buy them used) Incredible soundstage, clarity, and imaging. The treble and midrange are so *clean*. Dynamics are very good, and surprisingly satisfying bass response. Most importantly, they are very musical and involving speakers... and evern work well for home theatre. What else could you ask for?
SoundLab Pristine III+. Since developing a taste for electrostatic speakers I have been listening to models such as Stax F81, Martin Logan's CLS/Sequel/Quest,and SoundLab Quantum leading up to my present set, the SoundLab Pristine III+. The qualities in a good electrostatic design leaves me no return to a "dynamic" design. Why is this? I think musicality and presence best sums it up. Of course they are demanding on the electronics but the end result makes it worth.
I currently have NHT Super Ones because our new place has only a tiny room for listening. I hope to build a dedicated listening room this summer and plan to get Magneplanar 1.6's. (Before retiring, I listened on Magneplanar MG-IIIa's.)I have always liked the sound of planar speakers better than "boxes".
My present speaker setup began with Vienna Acoustics Beethovens and a Velodyne FSR-15. I enjoy their smooth mids & highs plus well defined bass. A subwoofer was needed because of the large wide open floor plan. I liked the Vienna's so much that I put them in the rear and got a second pair of them in the mk2 version for the front and added their center speaker, the Maestro for the center. The resulting sound is excellent, they sound right, very enjoyable, in 2 channel or sourround.
Linn Tukans,great bookshelf speakers,nice imaging, and surprisingly detailed without being fatiguing. Its not a sit down and analyze speaker,but a rythmic,get up and dance sound. Looking forward to buying Audio Physic's Virgos next,they make some awesome MUSIC. Music is what it is all about in the first place,not equipment.
Kef Q70's. I like most of what they do but the bass is not very dynamic so I use a sub with them. I dont like using a sub because it breaks the signal path. I've had alot of people tell me that its not that big of a deal, but I know if I get a set of speakers that I dont need a sub with I'll be happier. I've auditioned the new B&W 802's, and like them quite a bit.
