J. S. Bach. Basic, easy to follow—and that's what I started with, upon a friend's recommendation when I was a teen.

Why not start with the most gifted, Mozart? If his music does not break the ice with a listener new to classical music, most probably nothing ever will. Hey Stereophile, how about a recap of the composers most listed in this week's vote?

There is no one size that fits all. It all depends on personal preference and taste. Beethoven's lighter ones like the "Moonlight" sonata may be a start. Then graduate to the great Symphony No 5 (Fate knocking at the door&$151;also the first four notes of the theme for the landing at Normandy in WWII)

Tchaikovsky's best-known works are timeless yet very accessible. I think his Romeo & Juliet, Capriccio Italien, The Nutcracker Suite, and the 1812 Overture would be excellent places to start.

Haydn. Whether the symphonies or string quartets, a source of infinite diversity, civility, and discovery. Try him, you will like him.
