Have you spent any money on your turntable rig (not including records) in the last 12 months?

Who would have guessed? As the CD falls, vinyl rises again. Online readers have probably noticed Stephen Mejias diving deep into the black art this year. What about you? Have you spent any money on your turntable rig (not including records) in the last 12 months?

VPI 16.5 record cleaning machine (second hand) and Boston Audio Mat 1—both well worth it!

After going to computer based audio and getting rid of my CD player, I went out and purchased an analog system based on the VPI Scout.

Am looking for a reliable, well-made turntable that doesn't cost an arm & a leg. Wish I could find some in your mag.

With a VPI Synchronous Drive System: VPI HRX turntable: JMW 12.4 arms x 2 ( cartridges pre-mounted) resting on heavy slate on top of Soundesign damped steel rack standing on a stone floor: Garrot Optim FGS ruby cantilevered cartridge: Decca London mono cartridge: Boulder 2008 phono preamp: (Replacing a Manley Steelhead that may get swapped back in again), why on earth would I be spending more unless I got really silly and invested in a Rockport 'Sirius' or some such?

The only vinyl I have is the stuff on the side of my house. I don't do new formats.

I have purchased two Thorens 300 series tables in the last couple of months and two AT cartriges, an OC9 and a 33PTG. This to to play my 150 or so records after I made the "full switch" to a digital networked server.

I have decided to build my own table using VPI parts and so have purchased a platter and motor.

Holy crap, yes.

Not directly on my turntable, but on cleaning supplies.

Yes, upgraded to SME10, Lyra Skala, and BAT VK-P10 SE with Superpak. Long live vinyl!

I upgraded to a LP12 from a Rega. Well invested money, in my opinion.

A new Reson Etile (sic) cartridge for my Funk Vectored Linn LP12

I had a Shelter 501 II retipped by the Soundsmith, I bought a Grado Gold for use while I waited, and am seriously considering a new table and arm. And maybe a tubed phono pre and a step up tranny.

Bought a new stylus for my Goldring 1042 cartridge.

I gave it away years ago. I'm glad without vinyl. In my opinion Silver Discs are the best choice for the best sound.

Yes, in fact I've invested in a completely new vinyl front-end. It's all Stephen's fault!

I don't have crackly old vinyl! Come on - with SACD and 24/96 downloads, why would you bother? Can't play it in the car, can't play it on an iPod. Seriously though, I don't have much vinyl, so if I built a vinyl system it would be for the sake of it—I'm better off spending money on making digital sound better.

I spent way more on LPs, but the equipment cost is well into the thousands.

i upgraded to an entry-level table of a high end maker with a good cart. so, it was a decent, but not crazy amount of money.

A Rega P5 likes better parts. I've upgraded platter subplatter and counter weight.

Upgraded my arm from a VPI 9 Sig to a 10.5i and retired my old Benz LO4 in favor of a Dynavector 17D3

I upgraded the platter on my VPI TNT as well as the motor drive. Few grand and well worth it. Eyeing a new Shelter cartridge next.

My only change this year was to elliminate the "skin" from my None-Felt mat. Next year I want to re-cartridge—changing from a Dynavector 10X4 to perhaps a Blackbird. I'm one of those people who believes that the bulk of TT sound, and thus the bulk of any improvement in sound, lies with the cartridge and the quality of the recording. I have an AR TT (the model introduced in the earlier 1970s when AR re-entered the TT market), paired with a Linn Basik LV X arm. I'm using a Music Metre Calibre cable to connect to my preamp. For me, it's just not cost effevctive to do much more. Perhaps my reasoning is flawed, but, that's the way I hear it.

Look out for the iVinyl coming out soon. Can we stop this nonsense now? I do vinyl but this is getting really annoying now.

Johannes Turunen, Sweden's picture

No, but my turntable is next in line for upgrade.

I returned to vinyl a few months ago after a long absence. Starting from scratch, I went for the whole shebang: table, cart, phono stage, cleaning machine, and all the related tchotchkes (brushes, stylus cleaner, record mat, etc.). Apart from the sonic benefits, which are substantial, it's been a hell of a lot of fun—though I'm a good deal longer in the tooth than Stephen, my heart leaps with equal fervor when I go vinyl hunting.

I have just ordered the Benz Gullwing cartridge yet to arrrive and before the end of the year, the new Linn uprgade will be installed. I own about 2000 LPs, which I do not intended to give up.

I finally got my Steelhead. I got my Steelhead, I got my Steelhead, and you don't. Nah, nah, nah nah. Eat your heart out. Oh yeah, and a new turntable light. The light goes well with my Steelhead.

Nodaker's picture

Yes, I finally upgraded my turntable after 23 years—a nice addition it is, although everything I play is being digitized so I don't have to play them again. To my ears, the digitized LPs sound just as good as when playing the LP. Go figure.
