When I'm watching telly, doing IT, having a conversation, watching a movie, sleeping, or reading an intense book. Otherwise, I prefer to have music on the rest of the time. Thank God for good publicly run FM, I say!

Sometimes you just need to listen to the silence.

Not in the mood.

After hearing a live performance or after a satisfying home listening session I may take a break from listening to music, especially if I’ve shared these experiences with someone. I don’t like to listen to recorded music via headphones when I’m on the street, a subway, or a bus, or on a plane or train for that matter. I love hearing street performers and I’m enthralled by ambient sound.

I only listen to music when I can concentrate on it and focus. I don't listen to background music. I prefer silence. If I'm tired or distracted by some other activity I won't be really hearing the music, so why bother?

I long for music because it puts order into my scattered head. I have an infant and a toddler so right now music offers much more head/heart engagement than baby eisntein and the music box orchestra. Plus I have about 10K CDs so finding just the right thing is not that hard.)

After a long hard day work, a shower and a bed is all I need. But mostly I chill down with some music.

I find that there's always something in my home music library that I find enjoyable and entertaining at any given moment. I have over 2000 CD's and LP's, representing a fairly eclectic range of musical genres; it's just an issue of locating something that matches the mood of the moment. Of course, with the chaos-theory basis of my CD filing system, it may take awhile to find what I'm looking for. But then again, I often stumble across something that's "just right"...

If I need to focus and concentrate on something I'm reading or writing, then I desire no distractions. My system is now good enough that it will "draw me in" so the best alternative at certain times is to simply not play it.
