Affordable Furutech Amplifier

All right, listen up all you haters. Here's some inexpensive gear to help you forget about the prices of Lamm preamps, Magico speakers and DarTZeel amplifiers.

Furutech, who also make some of the finest and coolest-looking cables and cable terminations in the business, has released a new integrated amplifier. The Le Mans 60W puts out (you guessed it) 60Wpc of class-D amplification. This is a little amplifier that does it all: it accepts USB, optical, and coaxial digital inputs as well as analog RCA. The amp comes with its own low-latency USB 2.0 driver that will play and record at 24 bits and 96kHz. It also has a 3.5mm headphone output on the front panel for, as Furutech's literature says, "more intimate listening." Oo La La! The Le Mans 60W retails for $1200.

One possible explanation for all of the price-sensitive comments - The He-Man Expensive Gear Haters Club happened to coincide with CES this year. When their convention at the Las Vegas Pizzeria in Bethlehem, PA ended they converged on this show report en masse and fired up. I covered their convention and it was determined that any price was conceivably over-priced. This decision was arrived at as a kind of truce when members could not reach agreement over what represented a reasonable cost for a large pie with extra cheese. Actually they couldn't agree as to how much cheese constituted "extra" cheese and some members argued that an 8-slice pie wasn't large at all. Because of all the ruckus, none of the pizza was eaten yet most members walked away saying they've had better for less.

"Because of all the ruckus, none of the pizza was eaten yet most members walked away saying they've had better for less." - Ain't that the truth, Michael!
