A man who was "Bound for Glory" way, way too soon.
I remember hearing "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends" in high school on the "underground" FM station- after our family had discussed the tragedy of Kitty Genovese's public murder. I was a fan from that time on. He was so invested in the anti-war movement, the turmoil and assassinations of the 60s and 70s destroyed him, I believe. I saw him on the Johnny Carson Show in a gold lame suit doing an Elvis thing before he hanged himself. Something had died in him long before. It's too bad he couldn't have witnessed Bob Marley's emergence as a spokesman for personal liberation. I think it would have saved his life.
