HDTracks is currently offering a hi-rez (24 bit/96 kHz) uncompressed version of Paul McCartney's Band On The Run for $20. BOTR The download includes the original 9 song album plus 9 bonus tracks and full artwork.

Most importantly the sound is absolutely fantastic!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for not posting this in the music section but I figured that more people will see it if it's posted in this section.

Possibly this does sound absolutely fantastic but I find it hard to believe is was actually recorded at anything like 24bt/96kHz.

You're right - it wasn't recorded at anything like 24bit/96kHz because BOTR is an analog recording from 1973.

From what I can gather from various sources the hi-rez files are made from the newly remastered original recordings expressly for the 2010 reissues. And I'm not just saying that I imagine these files should sound fantastic, what I'm saying is that these files actually sound fantastic when played back via the Transporter. So "definitely" not "possibly".

So, what we have here is the glory of analogue 1/2 inch tape finally being revealed.
What's a 'Transporter'?

True, considering the music section is so well hidden few people can find it.

That's a very good summation of what's happening with these high resolution digital files: digital done right!

The Transporter is a networked music player made by Logitech. Check out Stereophile's glowing review here: Transporter Review

I am so glad to hear that it is great! My music server is packed pending moving back into our previously flood ravaged house, so I cannot download it now. But I am really looking forward to hearing this for myself!

Sorry to hear about the flood and I hope you will soon be returning to "normal" life.

What music streaming device do you use and can it play back 24/96 files?

On a related note, in-depth reviews of high resolution downloads are just one example of how Stereophile can and should increase their coverage of computer based digital audio.
