You like Huey Lewis and the News ? They're early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism... that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this -- Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square." The song's so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about... the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

I agree. I really like their sound. Its kind of the definitive San Francisco sound if you will. The guitarist for the News is Chris Hayes, an accomplished player that can play many styles and has a very sweet tone on that Hamer guitar.

I remember when the movie 'Back To The Future' came out. The radio stations played that tune "Back in time" alot. But if you were lucky, you would get to hear the long version of that song where Chris Hayes plays a really killer solo.

Here's a tune I really dig, although it didn't get much airplay.

Yes he was a bit commertial pop, but he did unlike many other band do a great live show. The dual leads were in sync and the harmonies were in tune.

Gee....are you going to ask if we like Whitney Houston too?

Actually the musical commentaries were some of the funniest parts of American Psycho. Bret could not have picked three better bands to goof on.

I have to agree with Teddy Ray that comparisons between HLATN and Elvis Costello are frankly demented.

Having said that, the band did well crafted, radio friendly, harmless pop. Only problem is, I really do not like radio friendly, harmless pop. They are too pasturized for me.

So are Hall and Oats. And Coldplay. And Phil Collins. And add name of any pasturized pop band here.

I need some angles or some agitation or some danger or something sublime to like pop music. Alex Chilton, check. HLATN, not my cup of decaffeinated tea.

Huey Lewis and the News performed the National Anthem for tonight's Phillys/Giants game. A more heartfelt, polished and coordinated rendition I cannot recall. Hopefully they will perform one of their megahits at halftime.
