Look at the Rega RS-1 at a local dealer if you have one or off Audiogon as a great buy and you can always add a sub if you need/want more bass.

The affordable bookshelf PSBs, Epos and Triangles have also gotten good reviewss from Phile.

Unfortunately the speakers suggested are over 11" in height, but if your can squeeze in something under 13" it really opens up the possibilities. You are on the right track to listen to the B&W 686s, Totem Mites and Totem Dreamcatchers. Here are some more suggestions to listen to.

I've got the Paradigm Atom Monitor's on my theater system and I'm a big fan, well worth the money. I've also listened to the PSB Alpha B1's and can recommend them as well.

You can actually lay any of the bookself models on their side on the shelf. Most models should fit.

Thanks so much for all of your great suggestions. I'm finding it difficult to locate dealers near me who have some of these speakers but I'll keep looking. As for laying them sideways, I thought that was verboten. Is that not the case?

Also, totally off the speaker subject, has anyone used something called the devilsound DAC? http://www.devilsound.com/
I'm currently streaming music from my mac via airport express/itunes but I thought this looked interesting. Thanks again for all of the great feedback!

The dealer Innovative Audio in NYC carries most models in case you are interested.

Innovative Audio
150 E. 58 St.
New York, NY 10155

Phone: (212) 634-4444

Dynaudio ranges:
Audience, Focus, Contour, Confidence, Installation Products, Special Twenty-Five, Accessories

- and no, it is nicht verboten to lay your bookshelf speakers on the sides. Doesn't do bad for the sound, but you may need to experiment with treble inwards/outwards.

Thank you for all of your helpful suggestions and advice. I've been able to find a few places here that have some of the speakers you recommended. (so far I'm leaning towards the dynaudio x12 and the Totems). There is one other brand mentioned that I haven't been able to find. Wharfedale diamond 10.1. Does anyone have feedback on these speakers? Thanks again!
