After staying away from this forum for three months I stumbled upon the personal message from March from our moderator, message announced with fanfare in the Dead Zone

Turns out that no one has posted in the Totem thread since it was "sanitized" in March. Traffic on this forum is nil.
Is anyone going to save those people from themselves??

GF, you've already made this comment elsewhere in the forum and through a PM to me. You don't have to keep repeating yourself. Traffic here has been very good.

But thanks for your concern. Let's keep the posts on-topic, please.

Stephen won't have to. It's D.O.A.

But we know that won't stop you from posting to yourself... over and over.

I did not think one minute that this group of square and plain individuals going to church would have a taste for Gainsbourg; ncdrawl had expressed his distaste for Gainsbourg; ncdrawl likes simple, happy, soothing Southern music, folk music where only white men are allowed to clap on their hands and dance while everybody else's life is miserable. He doesn't like Jazz

My hat off to Robert Baird for writing about Gainsbourg in this issue

Oh, my dense Frenchman. It's not Gainsbourg that elicits such indifference. Your endorsement is the kiss of death. And your crumbs for Robert Baird was the first positive thing you've said about Stereophile that I can remember- it must have really caused some pain.

Enjoy this little nibble while it lasts...everyone else is ignoring you.

My endorsement of Gainsbourg the kiss of death??

If I like Pink Floyd it is the kiss of death for Pink Floyd right?

Caveman, what you are admitting here is that until now you never heard of Gainsbourg

Zut alors! I missed that one
(Holy crap in English)
Like in the kindergarden I am being sent to the corner with a dunce's cap and no one can talk to me

I am frightened
Look my dear, honestly, there is no one posting here
Like KBK, like others before me, I am out! I have not visited nor logged in to Stereophile website in three months
I have this thread on Gainbourg because I grew up listening to his music and I always liked him

When you go to the bathroom next time shake it only once please

Scoop du jour

Jane Birkin is holding a doll on the cover of Melody Nelson:
she put it in Gainsbourg's coffin, buried it with him
Gainsbourg gave Birkin 25% of Melody Nelson

One day at lunch in Paris in the 70s at Brasserie Lipp he and Jane were seated next to us. A couple seats away was the extraordinary handsome writer Romain Gary (Jean Seberg husband). Salvador Dali was facing us..

It was a fun period in St Germain des Pres. Gainsbourg had a natural elegance that belied his "mug". White shoes, blazer, Rolls.. (Sort of Fremer less the Rolls..) Romain Gary, always walking the streets of Paris and eating clad in an extravangant Bolivian poncho and cowboys boots looked wild and out of place by comparison. Then you had Dali. This one was totally nuts and always great entertainment.

I know; they are jealous
Don't forget to include the moderator
In my best stunt ever impersonating Fremer I was asked once to moderate audio in the avs forum
Instead of reading Kerouac they read the Bible
They never heard of Gainsbourg
Je t'aime
La Decadanse
Lemon Incest
banned by the Vatican, in the US and whatever

I just heard a wonderful piece on the man on NPR recently, as in a few days ago. It would be worth checking out, given the thread. I believe his daughter was interviewed.

She is also singing on NPR

Charlotte inherited her father's house rue de Verneuil and she is keeping it the way it was at her father's death, not touching anything, like some private museum and shrine
Unsmilling and brainy like her father she is at the same time quite charming and unassuming like her mother
She prefers singing in English because singing in French hurts her, reminds her too much of her father
I like her too in the movie "La Buche"

I am not a huge fan of French pop music in general, can't stand Piaf and accordeon, and I really hate fakes, anglo saxon imitators and impersonators and singers like Maurice Chevalier that were popular in america because of their French accents but there are a few great truly original song writers and singers worth mentionning beside the ones I mentionned above.

- Veronique Sanson who went on to marry Steve Stills after leaving Michel Berger
- Michel Berger whom I love personally, wrote beautiful songs, and was second only to Gainsbourg in my opinion
- France Gall who was to Berger what Jane Birkin was to Gainsbourg
- Jean Ferrat
too much reverb in much of his recorded material but a great singer with a good voice
- Barbara
haunting singer but difficult
- Brel
powerful singer; saw him singing in Brussels sponsored by a clergyman, in a church, before he became a star, and then shook his hands when he was on a tour in Rio de Janeiro in 1968
- Trenet
the quintessential french singer, jazzy with unforgettable
melodies. Truffaut used one of his song in "Baisers Voles"

I never quite liked Brassens
too many spoken words, too much "grisaille", not enough music
He may as well read instead of singing
