I've got some and the sound is good and all, but I find myself sitting there thinking about how fucking Cannonball Adderly's "Somethin' Else" has one song per disc, with three entire discs containing only "Love For Sale," "Somethin' Else," or "Autumn Leaves" each.

Brother, it weren't meant to be presented with such discontinuity.

Peter Gabriel's "So" averages two cuts per disc.

That may be enough for some speed demon lover boy, but damn, 7 minutes per side is hardly enough to get her off before having to jump up and change discs.

These 45's seem more fetish than Hi Fi, in my interpretation.

A friend brought over an Ernestine Anderson 45. I have an original pressing. We didn't hear a diff.
But it was sure a PITA getting up every 2 songs.

You didn't? Were you playing them at the right speed? Optimally, the dynamics and transient response of 45s are killer. Of course, YRMV. Does this mean I agree with Freako? Looks like.

The original LP was very well recorded.

I suspect with a more careful AB we might have heard some subtle diffs. But is it worth it?
With a 45 you no sooner put it on than you have to get up to flip it.

It's not worth it to me but I don't mean that as a criticism of people who do go the 45 route.

Any recommendations for a 45 LP that has distinctly better sound than the corresponding already well produced 33 LP?

here is an example of one that is much worse, in my opinion. the $100.00 version of Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes. I have a friend who has a cost is no object system and the room to play it in. The record sounded hard and compressed, the only advantage was that it was cd like quiet. My $5 original copy totally killed it in terms of musical feel and dynamics. My friend was bummed to say the least because he had heard so much hype about this album. When he heard the original, he understood the hype.

Your friend should be happy he can go out and get that good sound for just 5 bucks!

Then, he can always gift the crap audiophile version to another audiophile who, unless YOU eff it up by playing the original, will think he's really got something sitting there in his record rack looking all Hi Fi!

Let me completely agree about Blue Monday sounding great in the 45 version. Let me also submit for your consideration:

The Minutemen: Project Mersh - wonderful sounding ep with great punk music.

Many of the Eurythmics 12 inch 45s are great.

The Relax 45 is absolutely killer! What bass! The vocals jump out of the speakers! I really did not care for the tune till I picked up the 12 inch.

keld: was your reply directed at me? i could not tell. if so, i was just giving a personal example, maybe others would prefer the sound of the remaster. i know it got raves in the audiophile press. i don't want to start yet another sound vs. music thread. we have enough of those. i will amplify my comments a little however.

i was bummed because i was expecting to hear better than the original that i owned. i also felt bad because my raving about this record may have influenced his purchase decision and personally, i didn't want him to think that i had tin ears after having raved about this record. i wanted him to enjoy the record also, and i know it is petty to say, but wanted to keep up my reputation, so we played my original. i thought he should hear how good it could sound and also know that i was not losing my marbles. he agreed that the original sounded much more musical and dynamic. fyi, that album was raved about as a masterfully engineered recording when it was new.

buddha, that was a very inscrutable reply worthy of your name as i can't tell whether you were being sarcastic or just joking in your reply? care to say? definitely not the first time i have heard an original outshine a remaster in some aspects, just probably the most disappointing.

A) they can seel them fer double, B) they certainly sound fantastic, C) some people just have to have the most of anything.

Me, I tried a few and couldn't believe how good they sounded, but like others here, found it's just too much work. I'm fine with flipping a plater after 15-20 mins. but 8-10 is sort of ridiculous.

For 45's that sound good...

Tone Loc's "Wild Thing" is tight.

"Trackin, with Lew Tabackin" is also sonically superior.

Has a great cut of "Summertime." It will really let you in on the wow and flutter of your table, too.
