It was a tough call.

I will miss the positive contributions each made and their extreme alternate viewpoints. This was fun.

I certainly don't miss Frog, but I thought Ethan added a lot to the forum. I don't think banning "objectivists" and "subjectivists" in matched pairs is a good idea.

The two of them would create threads that were dozens of pages long that were meaningless nerd nonsense. I stayed away from both of them. But both of them getting banned is news to me. I trust they both had plenty of reprimands that could lead to disciplinary action and were informed as much. They probably also didn't respect the staff. Always a banning offense. "Know your role". I'm the village idiot.

And I feel exactly the opposite. Michigan's posts were long winded but they had good information in them. But he was over the top at times. Such is life.

Ethan's were generally rude and self centered in a ignorant way that was self serving and without the kind of awareness that stated he had any balance or true depth of knowledge.

But, as you hopefully might see, this is how these whole things start.

Like a car that has a wobble issue that is over-corrected, the thing finally flips off the road from wilder and wilder undulations and vectors, UNLESS, one of the protagonists attempts to balance things by taking their hands off the wheel for a second - and let the thing right itself.

How that is done, is to give the other guy the chance to do the same.

Ethan's issue, IMO, was that if one gave him room in the given argument by backing off and giving a breathing space in the room for people to gather their thoughts and back down a bit, to find some common ground...he'd step into the breathing space you created..and argue from there.

That is the mark of an unreasonable and un-self-realized person. Ie, psychologically speaking, like a barking dog that does not know any better, and you can't reason with that. I saw a glimmer of hope in his behaviour recently, but I guess the old ways took hold again.

And there is an old rule that may apply here, Methinks, and this one of remembering the history of what came before, but 'do not speak ill of the dead'. It only perpetuates the entire situation that put them in the ground.

As an example, the post I responded to was inappropriate --as was my post.

Elk's post was exactly the correct one.

You can ban one avatar and one computer only.

You can't really ban anybody proper

On avs I ended up with 17 avatars but eventually ran out of computers and got really bored, too

I love being banned by dim wits

John Rocksavage
Pinkney Tuck
Douglas Ortmans
Jean de La Tour du Pin
Dimitri Yassukovich
etc

All people I knew two are dead I hope they forgive me for using their names and having so much fun

The moderation on avs was/is abysmal

with one exception for the home theater computer section which had in the beginning an extraordinary moderator in the person of Mark Rehjon and an extraordinary regular participant with Cliff Watson. Avs would not have become what they are today without those two individuals. The owner of the forum and the admistrator (a computer cop in real life) knew nothing about video and audio. They are just two rather uneducated and unsophisticated gold diggers, somewhat ruthless with some of the brilliant participants they depended upon.

In any case 99% of the participants are watching crap there and are just interested in entertainment, not in movies. Compared that to the extraordinary movie reviews that one could read in The Perfect Vision and you have an idea of the gulf that separates most audio folks and videophiles to people interested only in entertainment .

I was there near the beginning, with Mark and Cliff. I pointed at Mark as the man to see when that certain company wanted to make HTPC's into scalers of a serious nature, and I laid out the basics of what needed to be done and who to talk to, like some sort of single (or 2) page master plan that needed to be expanded on.

I have not been there in years, it is a total zoo there now, I suspect. I have over 7000 posts on that forum.

I'm opposed to banning either of them.

Michigan was very generous with explaining his experiences and vision of his realm of tweaking.

Ethan, as a manufacturer, was very helpful and informative on many fronts.

Michigan posted almost 100% about his tweaks. How about limiting him to Tweak Forum as a compromise? And not allow Ethan into that forum.

Then, allow Ethan in another forum, but no overlap with Michigan?

Of course, then you'd have to exclude SAS from stalking Ethan, so I can see how it would get cumbersome.

Anyway, both have much to offer, I hope someday there can be detente.

so..proof positive that you are a troll. You know what , they need to ban your ass too, Froggie.

as for Ethan and Frog....

Ethan is normally a level headed, rational guy, full of fantastic information. I admire the work he does and the products he creates..BUT even I got tired of seeing the pissing contests between he, MJF and SAS(who is nearly as bad as them both)... I have seen a few glimmers of civility there in mjf...but that always goes to hell the moment someone starts questioning him.

this whole thing started getting stupid during the ethan/mjf "challenge" .. they both acted dumb then... MJF for refusing to identify himself, ethan for being *overly* ethan.

I agree with you Buddha , I wish no one were banned and that includes DUP.

But at least they were evenhanded about it this time and I wanted to note that.

I enjoyed reading MJFs postings about tweaks.

I just tried to ignore things when the vitriol got out of hand.

They deleted my photo as the rules stated that the avatars could only be a picture of yourself. I told them it was a picture of me. What I had done is put on a Nice brown London Fog Trench I have, with the lapel up high, and then put on one of my wide brimmed Fedoras, and then the dark Serengeti Driver sunglasses I like to use..and..then I hunkered down in the coat and put my hand up to the side of my face so you could not see anything, Like I was avoiding being seen, recognized, or photographed by the paparazzi.

I was trying to look like, and make a subtle stab/joke at Dan*, when in the old days.. he would be poking around the downtown core in the dead of night looking for a few grams of coke.

The amusing part is that they had to edit that scene twice, to get to an R rating (prior to that it was banned, and then an X-NC17 rating)..and this, with marionettes that have no genitals.

You must be married, then.

The wife took them after the ceremony, one day, while you were sleeping. She put them in a jar and it is on a shelf somewhere, and you will probably not find them again in this lifetime. And every time you confusedly ask, in your way, she smiles in that way, and you know - it just ain't gonna happen.

As long as one doesn't rock their boat and the traffic doesn't go south it is not going to happen

The mayonnaise is taking slowly, traffic is up, they are getting awesome and chic full web page ads invented by the Figaro Journal in France.. They are counting their money..
They may even stop posting themselves one day in Audio Asylum.
They are still not drawing the older audio generation, the one from usenet in the past which was a lot more fun and had incredible writing skills.

"Michigan posted almost 100% about his tweaks. How about limiting him to Tweak Forum as a compromise? And not allow Ethan into that forum."

In principal I think it's too bad anytime some one gets banned. In practice, if it were up to me, there would be a lot more than just those two. Luckily, Stephen seems to have a lot of patience, is willing to let threads wind their way up and down, and I believe, give all malcontents plenty of warning. If such a simple solution as restricting trouble makers to certain sections would actually work, I'm sure he'd use them.

But I'm almost positive it wouldn't, and why should certain posters get the privilege to break the rules most of the time and then still get to have some kind of "special needs" section? In the larger world if you can't get along, generally you're out. That's both in an informal circle of friends, or in a formal situation dictated by law.

Is it that hard to just to abide by the obvious etiquette of the forum? No- it's easy. You take away to obsessive noise makers and you may loose some occasional wisdom and/or flavor, but overall you get a lot more room for the conversation to actually grow.

I think the American humour was all too obvious in that puppet movie, and all in all a very superfluous movie. But what the heck, not all people love the "Captain America's" out there, right? BTW, just thinking of it reminds me of Lamont.

OTOH, Danish TV broadcasts the 90. year birthday each and every new years eve. And we love it every time.
