I would personally go with HSU or Velodyne..both well priced and both great products.
If you are talking about a truly inexpensive sub that is an overachiever in sound then the Dayton SUB-120 HT, SUB-100 HT or SUB-80 HT are good bets. Check Parts Express. If you are talking about a good value in a sub that is "musical" and integrates well with a variety of loudspeakers then the SVS and HSU subwoofer should be considered. HSU just dropped the price on the well regarded STF-1 to $269.
Hey, thanks for the input, folks! I've been out of the subwoofer scene since I got a Mirage for the living room system back in 2000. Now I find myself getting fussier about the sound of the spare bedroom system!
Wow, those Dayton subs are way cheap. Do they self-destruct after the warranty expires?!
I have Audio Pro speakers and sub. They offer good value for the money, especially considered the price. I am using their Black Pearl (v.1) slightly modded. Link
Even though I find them a good bargain, I am saving up for a much better pair of satellites, as I have thrown my love in the direction of a set of B&W 805s, which is - of course - in a totally different league.
Audio Pro are IMO good to excellent hifi speakers, but whether they would be the right choice in a high end setup I wouldn't know. I am not familiar with their more expensive products.
On the other hand, the sub's from Audio Pro are renowned due to the ACE-Bass technique Link that enables deeper bass from smaller cabinets.
I am using a Ego Sub from the company, a ported sub that features a built-in 150 Watt amplifier and two 6,5" long stroke drivers. It doesn't make your hair turn backwards, but that isn't either what I want or expect. It provides a fast and reasonably deep bass (27 Hz) and is quite easy to place in the listening room. However, the company do actually make sub's with more power than this one.
Depending of your preference and general needs, you may prefer a whole other product. Just providing my 2 cents to your question...

Yes, I get the impression Audio Pro focuses pretty much on the European markets--so there's a little cachet for me, owning a piece of gear largely unavailable in the U.S.

Seriously, I pulled the trigger on--er, I mean, bought one from Audio Advisor. The PSB Alpha B1s I have in there right now give a nice, mellow, slightly woody tinge to orchestral music. Not the stark, x-ray, set-yer-teeth-on-edge clarity and detail some speakers give, but not murky either. I like 'em pretty well, so I hope the Audio Pro plays nicely with them. Haven't hooked it up yet--probably this weekend. I'll run it through its paces and report back.
