I think that I have figure out my 2496 recording problems as they were in the advance settings of both the Echo console and the Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 9.0d software.

In the Echo console there was a sample setting that I converted to the max of 8192, but the IO for audio was set at WDM, which I guess is windows media? I change it to Pure Wave and gave that a whirl. That is working fine. My Sound Forge monitor meters are now tracking properly.

In the Sony software in their advance settings: options to preferences to audio to advanced to configure: buffer size was increased to 8,192 as well. So far that has solved the problems, but I will do some serious recording live tomorrow night to know for sure, but I am taking my Sony DAT for back up.

Tonight the new recording of a middle school Christmas Band/chorus concert went without a hitch at 2496. The 1 hour and 8 minute concert took 25 minutes to burn with Audio DVD creator, but I am not complaining as the disc sounds amazing. Playback in 3 DVD players in our house worked flawlessly.

My back up Sony DAT will become my redbook files of the same concert for comparison. They sound very good, but not what the 2496 files sound like. That redbook transfer will come tomorrow after school. I will try copying the DVD in our multi-tray burner at school tomorrow and find out what issues that may bring.

All for a $150 Echo Indigo IO 2496 sound card and Sony Sound Forge and $40 Audio DVD Creator. Why is it I need a $20 K cd player again? Maybe the Oppo 83 is the ticket, the hot-rodded version of course.

Those of you who have taken interest in this little project in PMs will have copies coming to you shortly. I will be glad to hear your comments.

The postmaster has them as I write this. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...I am the great and powerful Oz! Well, Maybe not. I am hoping you are suprised and intrigued by what you hear.

If this proves worth the effort then all of my current gear will have to be replaced with a pair of good to great mics, and new dual mic pre and if I could just find some balance Kimber mic cables for $1 a foot. I ojnly need 2 -75 to 100 footers. It never hurts to ask Santa for someting outlandish. It's not like I'm asking for the new $80K DCS stack.

mic cables

Jim, I heartily reccomend my friend Ed at Kind Kables

a great man. He does all my XLR cables. I reccomend them heartily. Solid construction, great sound, and american made.

for mic pre..

id get the

DAV BG-1 (decca heritage, decca sound)

and/or the Hamptone HVTP2

both incredible.

for mics, you cannot go wrong with the aforementioned RODEs, or for a Multipattern LDC, the Audio Technica 4050 is fantastic. linear response, dead quiet, and id happily use them as my "desert island" pair.

I also suggest experimenting with Jecklin Disc, Schneider Disc, and Blumlein...

So, I am cleaning up some of the hi-rez tracks of the TMS Chorus. I am transferring them to redbook from my DAT backup for the school and come across the Soprano Sax solo with the 6th grade chorus.

I look at the program and find Patti Martin, the Band Director accompanying the chorus on Winter Night and think, wowwza, THIS should have been my hirez test. What a dunce I am. Kenny G stand back. I guess I am out of the running for "the most observant person of the year"!

I have contacted Patti about scheduling a session with her and her musician friends. This IS going to be fun. Thanks Santa!

New discs in flight!

It is great fun. I can't describe how excited the kids were at school to hear themselves perform. At times serious and at other times the giggles come out when they hear a mistake, but they all vowed to work at getting better. The 6th graders now have something to shoot for as they heard how much better the 7 and 8th grade band was. You can't buy the pleasure I get from doing these recordings for them.

Also, I have gotten back one lengthy response of the RedBook vs 2496 DVD audio recording comparisons. The comments were appreciated, insightful, and spot on. I am not spilling the beans yet as I do not want to influence others who have yet to listen and/or respond.

Once those of you recieve the new discs with Patti Martin's sax solo on them can you truly make a clear judgement.

The best Christmas Presents are the ones you do not expect.
