It's good to see that other people are getting hip to Matthew Shipp's music. Since the death of Don Pullen and Marilyn Crispell's turn towards a more lyrical style Shipp has become one of favorite piano players. I also enjoy his work with David S. Ware and highly recommend the three CD set "Live In The World". Shipp's piano solo on "Elder's Path" is breathtaking. Oh and I agree Shipp just keeps getting better and better.

'Live in The World' reminds me of another great set, 'The Dark Tree,' and Shipp of Horace Tapscott's playing on that album.

I've never considered Shipp's playing to be similar to Tapscott's but now that you've mentioned it I will give them a side by side listen and see if I can hear any similarities. And of course you're right about the greatness of "The Dark Tree", it is truly a totally unrecognized jazz classic.

You're right - they're not really much alike. But if I can wax all cosmic here for a minute, the spirit of the two sets strikes me as very much the same, with Shipp and Tapscott hitting the same feeling.

At least that's what I hear.
