College football is so much cooler than pro, IMHO.

My eldest boy is a Duck- got his B.S. there. (And a Ph.D. this year from UNLV- he's a scientist AND an audiophile ).

According to subjectivists, the synonym for 'scientist and audiophile' is 'deaf.'

Condolences to your son on his disability!

College football programs bring money to the school. That's the real reason they exist. Athletic scholarships allow students to get into school with test scores that my pet rock can exceed. I think this is fundamentally wrong. I would have no problem with athletic scholarships were "athelete/students" required to meet the same educational and intellectual standards every other student has to meet. As long as the NCAA and colleges continue to allow the lowering of standards for "unpaid professionals" I won't support college sports in any way.
Jocks get a free pass through high school and a free pass to college. It's disgraceful that they are allowed and encouraged to slide through high school and college only because they play a sport.

Put Boise into a BCS bowl!

The NCAA has a rule that prevents Boise State from ever being in a BCS game.

Rule 312.44 states:

No team with a blue football field shall ever be considered for a BCS birth.

Unless Ball State goes undefeated, then they'll let Boise have another go at them.

If you think that's bad, you should check out the rich white man affirmative action plans that the Kennedy and Bush families used for college!

Bitartisan bullshit!

At least the athletes get drug tested. Imgaine a President who couldn't have passed those tests as an undergrad!

Nevada to cover against Notre Dame, maybe an outright win!

It has been found that the brain is not finished growing until the age of 28.

This puts smashing your skull about in playing gladiator sports into new perspective.

Intimately connected to the thread I started about not being surprised.

I've always wondered why it's such a big deal when an "athlete" who can't read smokes a joint.

Shouldn't the inability to read and count higher than ten be more important than toking on a pipe now and then?

Didn't we just have a president who attended college under the legacy clause?

The real issue is, most of those so called "student athletes" couldn't get into any school were their academic qualifications, or lack of, considered.

Yeah, Buddha. I watched it all the way. The Broncos played quick and smart, as they always seem to do.

As you know, I am a Utah alumnus. I always root for the WAC and MWC teams because, nowadays, they get players and coaches who are just as good as those from the privileged BCS conferences. They just don't get as many of 'em. So, the underprivileged outliers (including the MAC, CUSA, and a few others I can't recall during my drunken haze -- Hello! Houston 45, Oklahoma State 35... and T.Boone begone!) actually have to TEACH their players and develop them from closer to scratch, than the mythologized PAC-10, SEC, Big-12, and yadayadayada. Can you believe that, after last year (Utah 31, Alabama 17) they STILL give the ACC and the Big East privileged status???

JoeE, I love ya, but you are just flat wrong with your athlete stereotypes. When I played football at Utah, I met more intellectuals (not to mention just flat-out academic overachievers, through determination and hard work) during football practice than I did before and after it. Truly, the jock fuck-ups get more ink than the non-jocks. But, according to ALL the statistics, concerning GPA, graduation rate, and post-graduate degrees awarded, jocks do MEASURABLY better than the non-jock student populations, at all the universities across the country. I don't know what soured YOU on jocks, but I got more out of playing football and baseball at Utah, that turned out to be applicable to the grit 'n grind of working through to an eventual PhD, than I ever would have experienced without varsity sports. The stereotype of the dumb jock who does nothing but smoke dope, shoot steroids, and hit the tittie-bars until the crack of dawn every night is like all other stereotypes -- utterly false and misleading.

Go Boise State (but PLEASE lose the blue field...), and go Utes, and go WAC, MAC, MWC, and CUSA.

Happy tunes...

If he's still in Vegas and ever needs anything, let me know.

Hey, is Crescent City far from Eureka? I may have to go there for work later in the year.

Hmmm. First regular season game in the Boss Hawg Bowl. Press from all over the world. Record breaking 100K on hand. Late game. Michael, Emmitt, Troy, Roger all pumping em up in the locker room.

I suspect this team is as overrated as in years past but gotta go with the girls and the over on this one.

Man, I wish the Cowboys had knocked Romo out of the game!

Romo was the Giants' MVP, throwing for three Giant touchdowns! Better than Eli!

I only knew this would happen because I am a Cowboys fan and planned on watching the game - they never win when I watch.

I'll post another lead pipe stone cold lock next week.

I may have exaggerated.. his audiophile status comes via my hand-me-downs and vinyl gifts and most would not consider me worthy of that status, but we try.

His degree is in Biology, with a specialty in insect flight mechanics (esp. bees). NASA subbed some of his research at UNLV for nanotechnology apps. He is also a cycling enthusiast and has a trick fuel-injected '67 VW Bug he built from the ground up. Oh, and he makes the best microbrewed beer and bakes like a chef. What a guy.

He still has a home in Vegas, but is trying to sell (good luck with that!) before he has to let it go (currently rented). He moved to Maryland, working at the university- has to go where the research grants are for now. We hope someday he can get relocated back to the west coast somewhere. Thanks for your kind offer- if he ever goes back to Las Vegas for a while I will send you his number.

Eureka is a lovely 80 mile jog thru the redwoods on 101.

Deny, I wasn't there, but it was fun to watch on the tube. Once again, mythology loses. Since there is no mythology in the NFL (10-6 gets you a shot at the Super Bowl), the college game has the decided advantage of routinely destroying all the mythologies that get hyped and harped on by the media. The SEC is invincible -- Utah 31, Alabama 17. USC has the #1 ranked ESPN top 150 player (only problem is, he got knocked on his fragile ass and couldn't play this week -- sob). Boise State doesn't play a tough enough schedule to compete within a BCS Conference regular season schedule (Florida vs. Charleston Southern and Troy State, not to mention Tennessee, who couldn't even beat UCLA at home in a grudge match...), and Alabama (Florida International, North Texas, and Tennessee Chattanooga), and I could go on. Not to mention the SEC patsies (Mississippi State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas...).

The Big 12 is invulnerable (BYU over Oklahoma, a couple weeks before they get rode hard and hung up wet by unranked Florida State).

They're all just 18-21 year old kids who spend too much time in the weight room.

College is best. No doubt. The NFL is jaded. College is fresh and exciting. And, the cheerleaders...

NFL cheerleaders are, apparently, too old and/or out of shape to do those leaping pussy-pops that the college kids have perfected. The NFL cheerleaders all look and dress like washed-up hookers.

Which is okay, if you have had enough to drink... but you can watch the college twats sober and still get the jollies.

Well, anyway, the football is more exciting at the college level. Harumph.

Dow to 10,00 this week or next...

Then 20 rise to 12,000 by year's end.

Your next stone cold lead pipe lock...Yankees over the Phillies.

1) Since the "Curse of Eisenhower" began, the Yankees have only won the World Series in years a Democrat has been in the White House. This is one of those years. Last time we had an 8 year Republican administration replaced by a Democratic one, the Yanks won (1977.)

2) Only 3 times in 103 years has a National League World Series champ repeated.

Of course, previous sports performance dependably predicts future outcomes!

Buddha, sorry. But the Phils send 'em packing. Equal pitching, more speed on the bases, and consistent hitters throughout the line-up.

This is a tough call. First of all, it is binary. You only have to choose one out of two (not like next Spring, when you have to choose one out of, what, a hundred?).

The Phils are more ornery. The Yanks make too much money. The Yanks would not have beaten the Angels without the week's rest of their pitching staff. The reason the Angels beat the Yanks over the course of the regular season is that the Angels can beat you every day with their depth. Give the Yanks a 3-man rotation, with no fatigue factor, and their prima-donnas get a chance to come to the forefront.

Scioscia was right, in his harangue against the league post-season scheduling. Give 'em one day's rest after each series, and the Angels win.

Not that the Yankees aren't good. They are a great team. But the Phils are better, throughout the lineup, and they are the more confident team. Not OVERconfident. Just right.

It should be a great, close series. CC 'better not groove those 95-MPH fastballs to THESE guys. The Phils can hit. Of course, so can the Yankees. But the Phils win at the margin. Bunting. Running. Scrambling. And, yes, beatin' the ball out of the park, when required.

Fuck the extrinsic political shit. The Phils in 7. Enjoy.

Now, to the Celtics. NC. That stands for "no chance." They can't take the heat over a VERY demanding 82-game schedule. They MAY get to the finals. I doubt that, but they could. As moronic and blimped out as O'Neal is, he can keep the Leprechauns out of the key all night long, without even breaking sweat.

The Cavaliers meet the Lakers in the finals. And the Cavaliers win.

The Celts need to invoke the ancient Druids for late-season spells. Ancient Druids will not be on hand to answer the call. The Celts will be strong through the regular season, but will have NO chance during the playoffs.

Hey, Buddha. You are now 0 for 2. Quit while you're ahead. And, I am sorry Boise State. You have a great team and can hypothetically beat anybody. But you won't get the chance. Advice. Get a fucking SCHEDULE, next year. Other teams do and will continue to pass you by as the season rolls on ....

Cheers.

A split on the road. Mission accomplished. Actually, I hate 'em both. Phuck Philly, and Nuke New York (but only after advanced warning to the Stereophile crew -- wouldn't want to lose Stephen and JA in the rubble...).

Looks to be a tight series, but the Phils were the first to break serve. The Yanks better win 2 in Philly, or they will be toast...

Other than that, who do you like between Oregon and USC? My hunch lies with USC, since they will be locked and loaded for THIS trip North, but it is hard to bet against the trend, and the trend favors the Ducks. Of course, a Ducks win would beef up Boise State's resume, since they own Oregon's only loss. Still, I think Boise will get screwed, just as Utah did last year.

My dream? Everybody loses except TCU and Boise, and the pricks HAVE to match 'em up in the championship game. What a fantasy, eh?
