It's been going on since the dawn of time. Sam and Roy are old rivals, like Tom and Jerry.
Gee, I always thought Roy and Sam were friends...sharing Roy's single malt Scotch and music interets. I have read several complimentary reviews of a variety of Roys products that Sam has written. Maybe I'm just not reading between the lines.
Yeah, I thought this was good natured back and forth too. Can anyone let us know about this?
after an enforced vacation, my computer seems to want to let me back on the board.
i thought the letter was so amusing that i had to go back and read the article. the article didn't seem so bad as the reaction from mr. hall. so much for the hobby being about a bunch of nerdy guys with no passion.
I love it, it's the Stereophile version of 'Bromance'
A picture is worth a thousand words. Hilarious!
Miss ya, Jeff

Sam left the rag for a while. He 'quit' the biz. If you find the issue where he first came back, all will be explained.
Can someone provide a link to that? Stephen perhaps?
I read the review today(which seemed positive)then went straight to Hall's comments. This guy has issues!!
I recall another of his S.T. bashes not too long ago.
can you explain it?? I dont think I have that issue..before my time, perhaps.
to me, the stuff seems like two guys talking trash, being friendly. .. of course I was an Army Infanty grunt.. the stuff we bullet stoppers said to each other made the ST and RH exchange look like a dialogue between mother theresa and ghandi.
it is friendly in nature, yeah? if no, id love to get the back story.
Roy Hall does seem a bit...eh, weird.
I'm not sure if it's archived online. I'll have to take a look through our office collection. It was a long time ago.
It's really all in good fun. Roy Hall's "Manufacturer's Comments" are my favorites.
We are talking about digging up ancient history, here. I myself do not have the issue at hand, but I do have it somewhere... and I won't comment on my recollection either. I think it's best to understand the context of Sam's remarks at that time, as being part of the whole situation.
id love to know the context, really.. which is why id love to see the mag issue.. or a link to it, anyway.
Sam and Roy are old buddies. This is just their own version of "Jane, you ignorant slut."
Seriously, if there were bad blood, would Sam keep finding ways to use Music Hall as his usual filler for months he hasn't got another Musical Fidelity product to promote?
Yes. Those two are doing the "go'round" for our and their amusement.
my letter was an appropriate response to a mediocre and flippant review.
my letter was an appropriate response to a mediocre and flippant review.
Where did that come from?
tell us teddy ,"why are you doing the " go - round?
Yeah- I think the guy enjoys getting worked up, and sauced up, from what I can tell from everyone who's ever met him. I have had two direct experiences with him. One he was charming and went out of his way, WAY out in fact, to be helpful. The other he was snarky and barely intelligible, and not willing to help at all. That's what you get I guess.
I think Sam not only tolerates it, it's my opinion that he thinks that it's half of the charm of dealing with Mr. Hall. It definitely makes for some funny reading.
Where did that come from?
Oh, I asked Mr. Hall if there was any bad blood.
That was his response. May be pulling my leg, who knows.
Yeah, no matter how I read it, that's what it looks like to me. If there really is bad blood I'm awfully curious as to what caused it.
As is always the case when two men feud, there's a girl somewhere as the cause. Probably Russian.
Yes of course! Nothing but trouble!!
Also the origin of the world's first conspiracy.
"my letter was an appropriate response to a mediocre and flippant review. "
I won't say his reviews are mediocre, although in this case I do think he missed the point of the DAC in some ways, but they are ALWAYS flippant. That's his whole perspective on life as far as I can tell.
Back in Oct. '07, Sam short-shrifted the TRIO and Roy raked him over the coals for wasting his pre-review wine and dine. I bit like a fish and fired off an indignant response. Roy answered my email personally with a more rational explanation of his objections and the admonition "thanks for your support."
I realized there are real relationships and characters in the hi-fi business and we are better off for that. Can you imagine a mini-feud like this getting published in the mainstream press?
I believe they are friends - ribbing each other - very cool and very likeable to their audience (me included).
I dig both of their senses of humor.
