There's a "sticky" thread on turntables under $1000, with lots of info. For a quick answer to your question, I would suggest to you the Rega P1 turntable with its included cartridge/stylus. I don't remember the price but I think around $300.
I've seen that and prayed for it in the local stereo store, but even with the $70 or so i might be able to get from the ittusb (maybe nothing since its my dad's), that would take me months at minimum wage when i finally find a job. Or i could dip into my college money...
new idea: can SACD players output stereo? Can I hook up a cheap component system to that DVD player one?

Umm, yes, you can hook up most players to a component system.

I remember once reading a great review of a dvd player/sacd player in either stereophile, audiophile, or somewhere else on the internet. I think it costed around $150, but for the life of me I can't remember the brand or model number. Does anyone know what I'm tlaking about?

Speaking of PT, have you heard of Blackfield (Collaboration between PT and Aviv Geffen) and/or Opeth (beautiful prog metal band)?
