An optical cable is for digital sound. I don't think it even has the capability for remote control. The Samsung manual should have numbers in the back that will allow you to program your receiver for power and volume control from the Samsung remote. You don't necessarily have to upgrade your receiver at all, unless you want 5.1 surround from your tv shows. The TV does have an analogue output (stereo). (The two RCA jacks where it says audio out.)You could just use interconnects and get stereo sound to your existing receiver.

If you want to upgrade your receiver, make sure it has multiple optical or coaxial digital ins. Mine only has one of each so I can only run two 5.1 sources...

Run an optical cable from the (Digital audio out (optical)) jack on the back of the TV to a digital in on the new receiver. Then you will be able to get surround sound on shows that stream with 5.1

An alternative to programing the TV or the Receiver to each others remotes. You may want to look into Logitechs's universal remotes. I own one of their cheaper models the Harmony 550

You can set up different activities using your computer. Once you program the remote you can press one button and It will turn on your TV, receiver, DVD player, or whatever and set them all to the correct input.

Cool. All I needed was a HDMI cable. Kept the original receiver (saved a lot of money!). I'm programming the remote that the cable company provides with the box but I'm looking at the remote you suggest. Very good job! Thanks!

BTW, HDTV is awesome.

Lamont,
Nearly a year ago, I got one of those LCD screens too. I'm in an area that can receive over-the-air (OTA) signals. Wow is the HDTV good on OTA digital broadcasts. I have a HDMI from the DVD Blu-Ray to the TV. Although DVD is pretty good on upconversion, I hate to go back to DVD once I watch a Blu-Ray disk. Hope you enjoy the viewing!

It's definitely a different viewing experience.
