Umm, okay, LS. It's no genius insight that NYT has a bias, but way to get all Rush Limbaugh on a thread about analog. Take your rants & manifestos to the Open Bar, dude.

No, that's what you say when you get sodomized by the police with a baton at a NYC subway station. Off-color joke aside, I can't believe the kind of crap that happens here.

Stuff that happens here leaves me befuddled more than anything else.

For example, it makes no sense to me that DUP would get banned, but Jan would be allowed to ramble on. Some of the stuff that gets sent to the "Dead Zone" is completely innocuous while some rather vile content is allowed to fester in the discussion forums. Some members were slapped by the moderators for what I thought was trivial stuff, while members of the editorial staff are defended against rude and childish behavior.

What I see is lack of definitive and precise rule set and inconsistency in enforcement. It's as though the moderators here aren't sure if they should allow a free for all or if they should police the forums. So, in the end what you get is inconsistency that confuses more than anything else.

LOL, by "here" I meant NYC, not the forums! I was talking about the big news item in the NYC, re: a guy getting sodomized by a police baton at a subway station. So relax, AlexO! Way to seize every opportunity to yet again launch a plea bargain for DUP.

Oh, NYC? Pffffttt... the NYPD is rotten to the core. They've been that way forever. In fact, figure this, there are 40,000 cops in NYC. 40,000 is not a police force, it's an occupational force. I think there are fewer soldiers in Baghdad.

Oh, and another thing... BRING BACK DUP!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there only a single moderator for this forum? If that's the case, the often thankless task of moderating such a place 24/7 could be too much for that one person. Having moderated a few forums myself I know how difficult it can be and how easily you can find yourself open for criticism. ( no, I'm not volunteering, my mod days are over)
I do however see a contradiction here between ordinary posters being disciplined with banning and staff members of Stereophile being allowed to get away with much worse. Well, as I think I said somewhere else on this forum, politics is everywhere.

in my opinion, stephen has done a fine job and should continue on in the same manner as in the past. the other individual was before your time and he had a number of opportunities to continue on the forum but either elected not to take them or was unable.
as an observation, we seem to have had many newer posters or just one-time lurkers coming on board since he has been silent. coincidence?

There has never been an instance on this forum when a member of Stereophile has acted in such a way that he should be banned.

Only one member has ever been banned -- DUP -- and he was given many opportunities to participate.

I am the moderator, yes. Whenever there is a difficult decision to be made, I first discuss it with John Atkinson. However, for the most part, we allow the participants here to moderate themselves. Most of us are adults and we should be able to act responsibly. When DUP showed over and over again that he could not act like a responsible adult, and when we decided that he was therefore harmful to the growth and productivity of the forum, he was banned.

I have to disagree. Fremer reacted in such a way that he should not only be banned but fired.

Obviously Stereophile thinks otherwise.

Look, I hope that we can all get over this Buddha vs MF deal. Thank you, rgibran, for digging up the old thread where Buddha and Mikey had the same conversation, peacefully.

I remember how that old thread came about. It was very similar to how this new exchange came about. I forwarded the initial post to Mikey and asked if he'd like to comment.

On this more recent occasion, I had forwarded selfdivider's post, which had more to do with the sound quality of Kind of Blue and nothing to do with demagnetization. I had no idea that Mikey's response would elicit what came next from Buddha. And I had no idea that Mikey would respond to Buddha in the way that he did. I am sorry that it went down like that.

Now, being the savvy dude that I am, on the previous occasion in 2006, while forwarding Buddha's post to Mikey, I told Mikey about Buddha. I said something like, "Buddha, by the way, is a really cool dude. He can be sarcastic and witty, but he's a great member of the forum."

I gave Mikey a heads-up because I know that he can be very passionate and quick to react with a hot temper. I would have done the same this time around had I had the chance, and I bet everything would have been just fucking peachy.

Buddha is a great member here, one of the few that I've met and one who I truly like. Michael, likewise, is an awesome dude. You only need to spend five minutes with him to see that he is an enormously gentle and caring person. I am certain Michael didn't remember the previous interaction, and, furthermore, had no idea of who he was addressing. IT WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING. Can we get over it now, please?

Stephen, you're not to blame in the least for the fact that MF can't have a normal conversation without getting all bent out of shape.

There you go. It's not just me who pounced on "poor Mikey" because of a single outburst, this seems to be a recurring theme to the point where you have to "manage MF's temper" and foresee various inevitabilities before referring a post to him. This is exactly the type of thing that I object to: this is not a single outburst, this is a recurring theme with him.

He does a great job of masking that side of his personality.

He didn't have to remember the previous interaction. All he had to do was be civil with this interaction. Furthermore, it's not a misunderstanding. It's a recurring pattern of rude, childish, and vile behavior on the part of a senior member of the Stereophile staff. There is a difference between passion and insecurity, anger, lack of civility.

It seems that everyone at Stereophile, like you and JA, comes out to make excuses for Mr. Fremer, whereas he doesn't even deem it necessary to issue a public apology.

Instead of holding a senior Stereophile editor to a higher standard, we're asked to "get over it now". How appalling!

Stephen is being too kind. The mess was 100% of my own making and I regret how it happened.

I owe MF many glasses of apologetic limoncello, absinthe, Bordeaux, and Burgundy.

Then, after he's had all those, I will make sweet passionate love to him while reciting the audiophile version of Kevin Costner's "Bull Durham" monologue and it will all be OK.

Seriously, though, I was a dick and I am sorry.

OK, here's the thing...

(Of course, picture in your mind, Bolero is playing in the background, on glorious demagnetized vinyl, I kind of like the Deutsche Gramophone pressing...)

"Well, MF, I believe in the sound, the imaging, the PRaT ... the beauty of a vinyl track, the optimum overhang, high frequency extension, good bass, that the rantings of The Great Randi are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe J Gordon Holt acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing compression and low sampling rates. I believe in the sweet spot (I didnt even have to change that line!)... opening your presents Christmas morning and finding Hi Fi related gear, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet listening sessions that last three days. "

There, I hope everyone feels better.

Absolutely. Just keep in mind that CES is an industry show. While T.H.E. Show, which will only be held in the Alexis Park this year, has opened its doors to members of audiophile societies, and will probably let in other dedicated audiophiles as well, CES is only open to industry folks and those who can find a way in.

Look for my last-minute preview of CES 2009 on the homepage in another 10 days or so. (I have yet to conduct interviews, so posting date is unknown).

Dudes, I'd love to fly out there, just to frickin' hang with Buddha, SM and the rest of the gang. SM & Jason... you're right, I think I'll get a lot out of it. I think I'm in this learning, soaking-up stage in this hobby. Diggin' it right now. I'll have to see my workload that week, and maybe - with my wife's full blessing - I can make it out there... if I do, the 1st round's on moi.
