Talk about, pop music, eh?

He missed the boat on James Blunt. At work, when that piece of dreck hits the airwaves, I sing it, "I'm ineffectual..."

I hear that if you put "You're Beautiful" on one side of the room, and "You're Body is a Wonderland" on a system on the other side of the room and play them at the same time, a mound of estrogen and Splenda will form in the middle.

I always thought Creep was about a guy saying, "It's not you, it's me," when he actually means, "It's not me, it's you."

Side note: My ten year old son had to explain to me what that song "Milkshake" is about. I laughed and asked him what "I Want candy" is about. He said "It's about candy." Thank goodness.

Hilarious! I love McSweeney's... I write for The Believer, their offshoot magazine, occasionally...

Buddha - that's crazy how your TEN YEAR OLD son knew what the Kelis song means! Unbelievable & troubling. Are you sure he actually knows???

We were driving along in the car one day, and that song came on the radio...and I looked over at my wife and said, "Ya know, I have no clue what this song is about."

From behind me came the exasperated exhalation sound of someone who is thinking, "I can't believe you don't know that."

So, I said to my son, "You know what that song is about?"

He said, "Boobies, dad. Boobies."

Then his eight year old brother said, "Yeah, boobies."

Which maybe makes sense, 'cause they know what "boobies" are actually used for, biologically speaking; whereas I think of them as mere playthings.

Maybe they were just closer to the metaphor than I was.

As an aside, calling them "milkshakes" is a form of metonymy, so at least there's that - my kids understand synecdoche.

____

On a related note, I do admit to being sub-remedial when it comes to understanding songs.

I can sing along with an entire tune, and have my wife say, "I didn't think you knew that song. The lyrics are great," and I'll look at her and say, "Lyrics?"

I guess my kids got lucky and got her 'lyrics gene.'

Okay. I'm somewhat relieved b/c your son doesn't understand what the song really means yet b/c it's definitely naughtier than that.
