If I recall correctly, Mr. Fremer commented that a $100k turntable is also obscene. But he still bought it (on accommodation that lessens the obscenity considerably).

I own a few things that others would consider obscenely expensive. I think they are obscenely expensive as well.

But I have found that the yuck per buck ratio was still good enough for me to trade the requisite amount of green energy for them.

Always a mistake to put down an entire genre of music.

Name a couple of your favorite artists? Ah... interesting. At one point people said they and their entire genre sucked, too.

More diversion from the original topic... ...but I enjoy much hip hop.

Good hip hop has more lyrical content, pound for pound, than most other genres.

I didn't know it worked that way.

Since I'm white trash, can I stil listen to music made by black guys, or do I mostly have the listen white singers? I guess that leaves me with Kings of Leon and Kid Rock.

ncdrawl, Selfdivider is a GREAT person, sometimes the vernacular of the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's rears its ugly head.

To accommodate your geography, of course he meant a bong load of wholesome, legal, federally subsidized all natural tobacco!

Which I disdain, so there ya have it!

There are only two types of music, good and bad.

Plenty of each in every genre.

Well, you can ALL come up to my neck of the woods in Massachusetts and have yourself a practically legal bong hit, and expect nothing more than a minor fine, thanks to the decriminalization of mary-jee-wana in a recent electoral referendum! That's right, an ounce or less gets you the equivalent of a parking ticket.

I'm not really a "smoker" but it's nice to know our law enforcement money can now to go to more important matters, like guys getting drunk and beating up their wives. Funny how alcohol can be a social norm, and weed the devil. At least here we just took a step to level the field...

Oh yeah- and the other great thing is: we will legally honor Jason's marriage. I guess we are sadly the only state that still will...

Oh yeah, crazy expensive gear. I'm OK with the occasional review too- it's just like what a few others said. How about keep the ratio down to like 1 in 20 roughly? I look through the Stereophile ads and see all kinds of interesting gear that never gets writing. Be nice to see some more of that.

There's a certain type of personality that stands above the fray at that critical developmental stage that requires irresponsible behavior.

Those people can't be trusted.

Nice record collection and since you can enjoy a range of things, I bet that (if you loosen your policy of pre-deciding that a whole genre is trash) some rap will eventually work its way into your musical consciousness.
I'd bet a zillion dollars that a lot of those names in your list enjoy some hip hop/rap on their stereos.

Remember that all those rockers come from a time where it was widely agreed that rock was just noisy "jungle bunny" stuff not deserving of the term music? That bluegrass got no respect from the longhairs (previous term for classical folks)? ((and parenthetically, the only ones with long hippie hair now are conservative country singers)) That pedal steel was resisted by some? That Steve Reich and many others were dissed and not accepted as serious artists by many? That most of the artists you list are inspired by black American music and that those sources also lay behind today's hip hop?

Although New York State does not currently allow same-sex marriage, it honors our marriage as legal. I would hope that CT and VT do as well, but I do not know for certain.

I'm so glad that I was born in Manhattan and went to college in Massachusetts.
