Here's a listing of the entire Bootleg Series, to date:

My order of preference for the Bootleg Series is:

1) The Bootleg Series Volume 5 - Live 1975 - The Rolling Thunder Revue

2) The Bootleg Series Volume 4 - Live 1966 - The Royal Albert Concert
Particuarly the electric material and the famous "Judas" exchange which ends with Dylan telling the band "To play f%#king LOUD!" By the way, if you've never noticed or heard this exchange then your stereo needs upgrading.

3) The Bootleg Series Volumes 1 thru 3
Not everything but there are some real gems on this collection including "She's Your Lover Now". The fact that Dylan didn't even bother to rerecord and release this song just blows my mind. Dylan throws away songs ("She's Your Lover Now", "Up To Me" - released on "Biograph") that are better than most songs written by other songwriters - again, completely mind numbing - plus the albums that the songs were originally intended for still end up becoming classics - "Blonde On Blonde" and "Blood On The Tracks".

4) A toss up between all the remaining volumes, although Volume 8 continues to get better with each listen. I should also note much of the material on Volume 7 is given better treatment on a couple of real Dylan bootlegs, such as "Thin Wild Mercury Music" and "As Good As It Gets".

I consider Dylan's never ending reworking of his songs in concert to be the price we fans have to pay to get Dylan to sing these same songs over and over and over again night after night after night. As good as many of these songs are I'm quite sure that anyone would get tried of performing them after so long a time. So Dylan changes them - sometimes just a little, other times quite a bit and other times to better fit the abilities of his current backing band.

At first I absolutely hated the Dylan's new versions of the songs on "Before The Flood" but a good friend of mine set me straight and I've never looked back. Okay so some of the time Dylan's reworkings of his songs sound good and other times they fall flat but at least he's constantly changing them and one rarely has to put up with a bad "new" version for very long.

I know of two bootlegs from the Blood On The Tracks sessions:

Blood On The Tracks - The New York Sessions (also available as Blood On The Tracks - The New York Sessions: Remastered)

Blood On The Tapes

Basically these are different releases of the same material. Some of this material was also released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1 thru 3 and the remainder of the material was released on the official release of Blood On The Tracks. So basically if you have these two official releases you pretty much have all the alternate material that is available. Blood On The Tracks was originally recorded in NY and then several of the tracks were rerecorded in Minneapolis with a different band. The version of "Idiot Wind" from the NY sessions is quite different from the release version recorded in Minneapolis and in other cases the versions sound very similar.
