Yeah, I dig this band. I wrote about their album, The Dust of Retreat, in the "Elements" blog, but I lost track of the band. Cool to hear about the new vinyl-only release. I'll look out for it.

I saw these guys last night, and I thought they were pretty good. The sound kind of sucked, but the venue (Bowery Ballroom) was pretty cool in terms of space and atmosphere (just not sound). I've heard worse though. Although there are a bunch (I counted 9 people on stage at one point), the lead came out with just him and his guitar for the encore and the stripped-down setup suited him pretty well. Lots of fun.

That's great to hear. Good to have you around here; we always need more people here who are into new bands.

There's plenty of room to jump on in with CMJ going on this week. I'm thinking of seeing Copeland at the Bowery on Monday or Tuesday (whenever they're playing) - I hear they're pretty good.

The venue is a lot of fun, although the sound cuts against the "closest to live" methodology of judging equipment/recordings - I wouldn't want it to sound like this. (Unless you mean live in the studio, of course).

Just a quick update on this, after having listened to them more. They're good - really good. If you like Arcade Fire (especially "Funeral"), The Decemberists, The Shins, and even the more "mainstream" bands like Coldplay (although there is no denying that the former bands are also very mainstream) you should check these guys out. Mostly pretty mellow, but "Cliffs" is a good, peppy radio-friendly (rare for Margot) song. If there were any justice in the world, it would hit the charts.

It is always fun to hear an up-and-coming band that you really dig. Also, Animal! seems very far from a typical sophomore effort to me. It is very polished (in a good way) without being over-produced (at least for the most part). Heck, for eight people playing on a single track (sometimes less, sometimes more) in this style of rock, it sound very, very tight.

Everyone, if you like rock, please do yourself a favor and listen to the following tracks: (1) Tall as Cliffs, (2) Broadripple is Burning, (3) At the Carnival, (4) A Children's Crusade on Acid. Then make sure you listen to Animal! (or Not Animal) all the way through if you like them.

Caught these guys while watching Conan O'Brien last night. They got a great sound. There were like 20 young dudes and 1 girl on the stage, all looking like they just strayed off the L train. One guy had a toy piano slung to his back; he turned around and this other guy started banging the shit out of it with one finger. Bordering on gimmicky, sure, but it was very whimsical and fun, and exciting. The band as a whole has a great energy & inventiveness, at least playing that one song I heard. The lead singer has a gorgeous, plaintive voice, almost too pretty... I urge him to smoke 200 packs of unfiltered Camels in 50 days, followed by drinking a copious amount of Makers Mark after every breakfast. With a little more grain and grunt and wear in his throat, the guy will have a killer voice. I'm going to follow these guys for sure & will get their LP. Thanks, judicata!

Hopefully he isn't a flash in the pan. His voice might just improve with age.
