Ooh, thanks for this!
Excellent!
I still don't understand 24-bit 44.1 however. To my ears higher sampling rates makes a greater difference than additional bit depth, especially since 16-bit is more than enough to handle the dynamic range present.
As a separate issue: what do you think of the music?
Where's the damn LP?
See you in Santa Rosa October 8.
Now I'm confused. I've read that the bit depth is what is really important and that higher sampling rates do not have as big an impact as does longer word length. Maybe someone else can step in here and provide some additional information.
As for the music, I've only listened to the recording one time and everything sounded pleasant enough. The music is fairly laid back but it does some very nice pacing and Byrne's voice sounds pretty good, kind of like an old friend. It fact, it sounds much more like a David Byrne project rather than an Eno/Byrne project, so much so that I'm still trying to figure out what Eno's role in the project is/was. I'll report more after I've listened to it a few more times.
I have read this as well. I don't understand how this could be.
With my recordings truncating a 24 bit recording to 16 bit makes no discernable difference as long as the recording levels were high enough to properly use the dynamic range that 16 bit offers. Resampling from 96kHz or 88.2KHz to 44.1 does decrease fidelity however.
24-bit is "better" for recording as one can record at lower levels, with more headroom above the quiescent noise floor of the equipment.
How about the Rhythm and Timing?
I would guess that this increased headroom is why that some people feel bits trump frequency, however, even though 24 bit is "better" than 16 bit, the 44.1kHz sampling frequency means that the file is not truly high resolution. I will agree with you that real high resolution doesn't start until one gets to 96kHz, 88.2kHz and higher. And not via upconverting but via material either recorded or transferred from analog at the higher sampling rate.
Very funny. Ha.
However I wasn't using the audiophile definition of "pace" but rather the musical one.
I heard "I Feel My Stuff" about 3 weeks ago. That is one frgn' hot song with incredible lyrics - listen to the whole thing! Good to hear them together again.
It gets even better!
Phil Manzanera is on board!
