The best post of today. Happy to read of your experience!
Wonderful!
And +1 on this being a great post.
I have always liked the orchestral arrangement as well. As trumpet player, it is a real thrill to play it the first time and to get to play the opening solo.
The other delight is playing the muted piccolo trumpet solo in the Samuel Goldenberg section.
Trio Solisti's piano trio arrangement of PAAE may now be available, or soon will be available on CD.

This will be interesting given that the original is for solo piano. I would never have even considered adding more piano.
Once, in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 1970s, the orchestra went on strike and concert pianist Lorin Hollander was brought in as a sub. He performed the original "Pictures" on solo piano, which turned out to be one of the post powerful and moving performances I've ever seen and heard. I'll never forget it and wish that Lorin would have recorded it.

He did record Pictures on LP, but as far as I know it was never reissued on CD.
I love those occasions when the musical performance somehow gets amplified by the situational crisis. I was at the Pierre Laurent Aimard recital, shortly after 9/11. Never did Beethoven's Appassionata sound so urgent, visceral. Thankfully, the performance was recorded on CD, but no matter how well the recording holds up, that live performance was one of those occasions that forces you to say, "No, no, no. You had to BE there."
Another great example of this phenomenon is Bernstein's legendary performance of Beethoven's 9th from Christmas Day 1989, only 6 weeks after the fall of the Berlin wall. I was watching it 'live' (albeit on TV) and the emotion of the occasion was almost overwhelming, impossible to relive after the event. I clearly remember having tears in my eyes during the third movement which was played with extrordinary sensitivity.
Do you remember the label?
Dave
I think all of his recordings were for RCA Victor.
I'll start searching again.
Thanks,
Dave
Isn't it this one? It's from the right period.
Oops! Speedreading lets me down again. I realized I answered the wrong question
Hi
I ordered Trio Solisti's piano version and it is an excellent CD. Its available on Amazon.
I also looked up the Lorin Hollander version mentioned and found several for sale at a store called Musicstack.com. I was just a bit dubious about ordering from them by CC, dont know why but it didnt feel right.
