what am i doing wrong?

It's possible that the sound card might take time to break in but it's much more likely that there is some setting in the sound card that isn't configured for the optimum sound. Sorry I can't be more specific but I don't have any experience with that card.
Before you got the new card, what were you listening to and how? (analog outs?, digital outs?, etc.)
What are you listening to now? (digital out on card to DAC? Analog out on card?)
i used internal sound card that came from dell (upgraded when i bought computer to creative sound card-don't remember which one) and i used internal hard drive. never used foobar before. otherwise everything else the same.
The analog outs on your new card should sound at least as good as the Creative Labs card.
I don't know what would make it sound veiled.
All I can suggest is to make sure that all digital processing (such as EQ, normalizing, reverb, etc.) are off on your player. These sorts of things can do odd things to the sound.
thought i'd end this post on a happy note. system is now fine. i upgraded xp's bios, found out that the cable from the motherboard to the cd drive was defective, and installed another cd drive just to be sure. so far so good. thanks to those that responded for suggestions!
