Are you not using a digital cable, optical or the RCA connector style SPDIF single cable to drive your HT receiver?

When you say RCA's it makes me believe that you are just sending analog out to your HT receiver. I will admit that I have had a HT receiver with a defective digital receiver in the past. The manual switch on the receiver and the romote would not change the receiver's input from analog to digital.

Maybe Kal Rubinson has a better or correct solution to your issue. As a side note, now that I am in HD TV land, I am, or at least think I am seeing a difference in quality between HDMI and component video in, with the HDMI having more bad artifacts at 480P. Maybe I just need a much better HDMI cable. Yikes, here we go again getting in the pixie dust cable differences again!

Good Luck.

I did post this under digital sources. While I have the player hooked up through analog connection. I am using the external in via 6 rca jacks. The receiver has all kinds of digital inputs but it is pre-SACD and doesn't have HDMI.

I tried looking at the set up of both the universal player and the receiver and the on screen display doesn't show any setting error. Did a test tone for all the channels.

One day I had surround the next day I didn't. I don't remember any power surges.

The next thing I can try is switching out the connectors. I don't see what good that will do.

I'm afraid I have something that needs fixing.

I would start with the connectors and cables.

My Sony SACD player also has a 2 channel only setting which is how I use it as I do not do multichannel with this player. You may see if your CD/DVD player is defaulting to 2 channel only. Mine has a front panel light to inidcate 2 channel or multi-channel. You could also use your display menu to see where you are. You also should try and run a digital cable from your player to the receiver and see if you prefer the DACs in the receiver over the player by iteslf. You never know which is better until you try.

Keep trying. You'll get it right.

To troubleshoot you could hook up the surround channel wires from the player to the receivers front L&R channels just to verify you are getting signal from the players surround channel outputs.

You can then reverse the process and hook up the players front L&R channel wires to the receivers surround channel inputs just to verify you are receiving the signal from the players front channel outputs.

Results would indicate an incorrect setting in the player or receiver, or a malfunctioning unit in need of repair.
