Hi Stephen,
What do you think of the onkyo a-9555 with the music hall 25.2 cdp? The onkyo amp seems to get better reviews than the music hall amp and vice-versa on the cdp. What do you guys think? Would I be silly to mix and match?

Hi there, Marty.
Well, I don't think you'd be "silly" to mix and match, but I do think that you should try to listen before you make a decision, if possible. It's always best to listen for yourself. It's difficult for me to imagine that either unit will sound better than when used with its own partner -- after all, the Onkyo was made for the Onkyo, and the Music Hall was made for the Music Hall -- but it might not be as simple as that. Listening is always key. I haven't heard the Onkyo and I've only heard the Music Hall at shows, so I can't offer a very strong opinion either way. In general, however, I would tend to stick within one brand -- for looks(!) as much as sound. But that's just me. Others may disagree.

Thanks -- appreciate you writing back so fast!

Listening would be ideal, but nobody around me (Washington, DC) has the Music Hall amp/cdp setup.

Anyone else on the forum have much experience with these two setups?

Go listen to the Jolida JD 1501A integrated amp and Jolida Model JD 100A CD player. For $1625 you won't find much that will sound better with your Monitor Audio RS6s. But you gotta listen. If its more money than you got right now, save up.

I have heard both the Music Hall amp/cd combo (via Epos M12)
and the Onkyo amp/cd combo, but can't remember which speaker. The Onkyo sounded very good but I did prefer the Music Hall...it was much more musical and more detailed (which could have been the M12 speakers). I suspect that one of the reasons for the difference in sound is the fact that the Onkyo amp is a class D amp. (Check in the equipment reviews, both Onkyos were reviewed last year.)
I purchased the Music Hall/Epos combination about 2 years ago and am most happy with it.

Do keep in mind the size your room. The Onkyo has more power but the MH fills the room I have (17 x 19) very well.
