Hi,
What speakers do you have? That has a bearing on the amplifier or receiver you buy. Also, are you dead set on getting a receiver or would you entertain the idea of an integrated amplifier?
BTW, you can get great sound for $2k. You are going to have fun!
An integrated amp would be a good way to go. Then if you still wanted AM/FM you could find a vintage tuner separate on ebay/craigslist/audiogon. Even with their age the tuners of the 70s will beat most any receiver tuner of today.

I haven't heard the Outlaw receiver, but it got a great review and is a great value, lots of bang for the buck.
So I'm going to go with the Outlaw - I haven't seen one bad review, and it should fit all my needs. For speakers, I want to get something nice that I can build on to later. So far, I am considering the Aperion Intimus 6T series (I won't be buying till August, so sadly the 633s will be off the market by then) and the Revel Concerta F12 series. I would like to keep the speakers around $1200 or less. Any thoughts? I know the Aperions are higher, but I have heard such great things about them.
I am going to start auditioning stuff soon, and any ideas would be great. This will be mostly for jazz, classical, and African (I have a lot of Kora cds (wow Toumani Diabete's new album is amazing!!!).
Thank you all for your help with a newbie!!!!
I'd listen to the Paradigm Studio 60 also. It might be a revelation compared to those you mentioned. If you can't swing the Studio 60s then listen to the Studio 40s.
Thanks - can you elaborate more why?
My ears and brain say they sound better than the Aperions and Revels. But you gotta listen for yourself.

I'd also look into a used pair of Vandersteens on AudiogoN, either 2CE Signatures or even some 3As. There is an upgraded one owner pair of 3As with stands for $1200 there right now.
