Why the delay in sending out the electronic version of the magazine?

Hi jazzfan.
Thanks for alerting me to this. Zinio should have a production schedule which matches with our print schedule, so that digital subscribers and print subscribers receive their issues at the same time. I'll look into this and see if a discrepancy exists. If so, I'll try to fix it.

I'll post back with any info.

I have a subscription to the electronic version of Stereophile magazine and I am a bit puzzled by the somewhat long delay in sending the electronic version of the magazine. By "long delay" I am referring to the fact that I do not receive the electronic version until two or sometimes three week after the print issue as been released. What is the reason for this delay and can anything be done to speed up the process so that the electronic version is available at the same time as the print version?

Thanks

Since we're talking about the April issue...

I've looked into this, and I am surprised Zinio gets the issues out as fast as they do. That's alot of transcribing from the print edition to do to convert to electronic files.

I figure if someone sent me the print edition and then I had to get the Zinio version out, it would take me months!

The fact that they can do it in a measly two to three weeks is nearly miraculous.

Buddha,

Normally I really won't care about the two week delay in receiving my copy of Stereophile but since with each new issue there also appears a new forum section on that issue and these sections tend to be very topical and timely. In many cases by the time I finally receive my electronic copy of the magazine the once active threads in that issue's section of the forum have been rather "stale". It would be nice to be able to read and understand what is going on in these threads and to contribute to these threads while they are still of interest to the other forum members.

Also thank you Stephen for looking into this matter.

Stephen,

I just received my electronic copy of the April issue so perhaps last month's long delay was something unusual and this month things are back to normal as far as Zinio is concerned.

And by the way, what's with the DRM that Zinio imposes on the digital copy. DRM is still the devil's handy work whether it comes attached to a digital audio, video or "print" file.

Thanks for the update, jazzfan. Yesterday was the official on sale date for the April issue, so you received your digital copy right on time. I looked back at previous months, and it seems that Zinio has been consistent -- with the exception, as you noted, of the March issue when they were off by one full week.

I'll make sure that they've got the correct on sale dates for the rest of the year. Thanks again.

Edit: I haven't looked into the DRM issue. Can you tell me about how it's employed? I know that Zinio allows users to send a free issue to a friend, and also offers a web-based version of each issue, via URL, so that you don't have to download their software.

Should all e-subscribers receive their electronic copy on the same day? I haven't received mine yet (assuming I get one this month as I only subscribed about 3 weeks ago)...

Hi Ajani.
From what I understand -- and I must admit that I'm not completely clear on this -- the amount of time it takes for you to receive the first issue depends on whether you purchased your subscription directly through Zinio or through a page on stereophile.com. Apparently, when purchasing through our website, there is a processing delay, which unfortunately cannot be avoided.

I will, however, direct your account to a Zinio rep, and ask that you be sent your first issue immediately.

Thanks Stephen. I just received the April issue, which is the one I was most worried about... it would have been a shame to have had my 1 year subscription start after the recommended components issue...

Thanks Again for sorting it out.
