Ruben, does this happen right away, whenever you play loud music,or after some time?

I would say after some time but what you need to understand is that when I start playing music I start low and slowly bring up the volume as I get used to the current level and desire it to go higher. So I would say that in a matter of 10-15 minutes I might be at a level where I experience the anomaly.

Hmmmmm Ican only think of 3 things.a) Your pre-amp,if it has tone controls, developed some kind of a faulth and shuts down the high frequencies(unlikely though) b) If the RSIIIB has only one tweeter/ribon,it's coils gets overheated or most probably c) the crossover gets overheated, again, probably due to a fault (ageing etc) and cuts off.

I replaced the tweeters (have spares) and the issue is still there so it was not the drivers. The Preamp is a McIntosh CR10 which has no balance or tone controls and after using a different pre determined it was not the preamp causing the issue so I am left with the conclusion the problem is in the crossover.

Dumb question...If I take the crossovers out can I send them to a shop for evaluation and repair or do I need to send the whole speakers, which are about 80 lb each?

Thanks

If i was you,i'd send both speakers for several reasons.
First, you are not 100% sure if it is the crossovers at fault
Second,if it is actually the crossover,i doubt they have the original parts,so,the'll need both crossovers for upgrading, otherwise, you'll get different sound from one of your loudspeakers and third, the pros have a liquid anti-corrosion thing they apply on the connectors(between crossover and drivers) to prevent corrosion and it is quite difficult if not impossible to find it in stores. You don't want everything inside your loudspeakers to get corroded.

So i have been doing some research on these speakers that i have. They are a pair of Infinity RSIIIb floor speakers. Looking on ebay and other sources trying to figure out a good price to set. What do you guys think? These speakers haven't been played in over 2 years and have just been sitting in a side room.

email me at

if you can help me out with setting a price.

They may have thermal relays in the tweeter crossover circuit, to save the tweeters from abuse. The volume goes down, they reset and everything seems fine..until the volume is cranked again.

We need a picture of that crossover. Then it can potentially evaluated. The thermal switch, if there, should be easy to visually identify.

found the circuit pretty easy.

Fuse, iron core coil, variable resistor, and two zeeners to protect the tweeter.

variable resistor needs cleaning, is the least of the issue. Clean the fuse holder, and put in a slow blow 1 amp, NEW fuses, identical in both channels.

And then consider turning the volume down. The only reason Infinity would consider doing this, is that too many folks were popping tweeters. Not due to bad design, but simply cuz folks kept popping them.
